It may seem like a far-off goal, but the draft of how nine communities in the West Kootenay area plan to reach 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050 is here.

On Nov. 4, the West Kootenay EcoSociety’s David Reid joined the Kootenay Morning show to share some highlights from the draft.

“Local governments and local people have a lot of potential to influence how much carbon pollution we put into the atmosphere, and how effectively we can move toward 100 per cent renewable energy,” Reid said.

The draft includes four moves to achieve that goal: transportation, heating & cooling, electricity and waste management. While there isn't an estimated pricetag or timeline for the initiative, Reid said it's important for locals and local government to do their part, and not leave it to corporations and other governments to act alone.

“We’re working with the tools that we have in the place where we live, so that we can make the change that we can make. Part of the vision of this is that we’re helping to create a culture of renewable energy.”
