{"id":99486,"date":"2022-06-09T14:26:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T18:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=99486"},"modified":"2022-06-09T14:26:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T18:26:12","slug":"local-journalist-receives-national-recognition-at-mindset-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/local-journalist-receives-national-recognition-at-mindset-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Local journalist receives national recognition at Mindset Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cortes Island resident and journalist <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Odette Auger recently received a Mindset Award for mental health reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Auger began her journey in journalism with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortesradio.ca\/deep-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \"Deep Roots\" project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The audio story initiative was a collaboration between Friends of Cortes Island Society (FOCI) and Cortes Community Radio (or \"CKTZ\"). Auger received guidance and training from then-local <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rob Selmanovic, a CBC producer. When she began writing the grant to fund \"Deep Roots\" for its second year, Auger applied the lessons she had learned and decided to \u201cinvert the process\u201d in order to \u201ccenter Indigenous voices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Auger now writes for several publications including Watershed Sentinel, Asparagus Magazine, Windspeaker, La Converse, APTN and IndigiNews and CKTZ. Her story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptnnews.ca\/national-news\/island-health-cultural-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWorkers tasked with tackling anti-Indigenous racism say they faced scapegoating and backlash at Island Health<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/authory.com\/OdetteAuger\/Workers-tasked-with-tackling-anti-Indigenous-racism-say-they-faced-scapegoating-and-backlash-at-Island-Health-a70917185506648faab78603512777897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a>\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was an awarded finalist in the category of \"workplace mental health\" at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindset-mediaguide.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mindset Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 The awards were presented by Canadian Association of Journalism - in collaboration with Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma- awards funded by Mental Health Commission of Canada with support from CBC News. Auger also received an honorable mention for her piece titled <a href=\"https:\/\/windspeaker.com\/news\/windspeaker-news\/gentle-truth-telling-how-talk-our-youngest-community-members-about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGentle truth telling: How to talk to our youngest community members about residential schools\u201d<\/a> for the \"youth mental health\" category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Auger attributes her journalistic style to her personal approach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe best feeling I would say about writing and interviewing is that process of preserving the heart of the story, which is the voices and what they really, what they lit up about or what they offered as a gift.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also shared her own story of talking to her kids about residential schools and how that motivated her to write the award-finalist article.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_99490\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99490\" class=\"wp-image-99490 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Odette-Augers-son-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"A young boy places rocks on a stump at the beach.
