{"id":98698,"date":"2022-06-06T11:52:48","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T15:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=98698"},"modified":"2022-06-06T11:52:48","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T15:52:48","slug":"muna-taro-exhibit-coming-together-to-educate-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/muna-taro-exhibit-coming-together-to-educate-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Muna Taro exhibit: Coming together to educate children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new exhibition at The Tett Centre in Kingston celebrates education in Nigeria and partnerships between organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tettcentre.org\/events\/muno-taro-exhibition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Muna Taro exhibit<\/a> is a collaboration between non-profit organizations 1 Million Teachers (1MT), Five Cowries Arts Education Initiative and Girl Rising. The non-profit organizations work to enhance access to education and training for teachers in Nigeria and 14 other African countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe focus on children from horrible backgrounds, they\u2019ve witnessed their parents murdered\u2026they're displaced, despondent, many had never been to school, it\u2019s beyond teaching, it\u2019s how do we begin to end the cycle of poverty, violence and illiteracy?\u201d Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Humanitarian Interventions Dr. Mariam Masha says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hakeem Subair founded 1 Million Teachers when he was a student at Queens University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was very personal to me, before I relocated to Canada\u2026my wife was looking for a daycare for my daughter and she didn\u2019t find anything she liked and the idea was 'how about we start a daycare?.. Then why don\u2019t we start a preschool..why don\u2019t we just continue?'\u2026There was no plan at all, that exposed me to so many challenges when it came to education and just recognizing teachers were very significant in making a difference,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The exhibit includes the \u201cMy Story of Water\u201d project where children explored the importance of water to sustaining life. Hand-painted jerry cans are on display, along with photographs of children engaging in reading, crocheting and more. Subair says the arts-based education develops critical thinking and communication skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey\u2019re learning by doing project-based work without even knowing they\u2019re learning, that\u2019s the fun part.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through a partnership with Queens, 1MT provides opportunities for students in the education program to go to Nigeria and lead training programs to attract new teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Masha says this work has not only turned childrens\u2019 lives around, but has transformed whole communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cToday, they are coding, reading, writing, they have hopes and dreams..it creates a multiplier effect as children bring this renewed sense of hope back to their families and communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Muna Taro means \u201ccoming together.\u201d The exhibit runs until June 29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full CFRC interview with Hakeem Subair:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new exhibition at The Tett Centre in Kingston celebrates education in Nigeria and partnerships between organizations.
