The announcement was made by Carolyn Bennett and Sheila Malcolmson, the federal and provincial ministers of mental health and addictions, on Wednesday in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The move is in response to the opioid crisis in the province. In 2021, the BC Coroner Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/birth-adoption-death-marriage-and-divorce\/deaths\/coroners-service\/statistical\/illicit-drug.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> 2236 deaths from toxic, illicit drugs. In 2019 that number was 981. A toxic drug crisis was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/resource-gallery\/Documents\/Statistics%20and%20Research\/Statistics%20and%20Reports\/Overdose\/2021.04.16_Infographic_OD%20Dashboard.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> in BC in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Maclachlan is a social worker with <a href=\"https:\/\/community-connections.ca\/get-to-know-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Connections<\/a> in Revelstoke.
