{"id":97921,"date":"2022-06-01T10:11:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T14:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=97921"},"modified":"2022-06-01T11:45:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T15:45:41","slug":"department-of-agriculture-adds-200000-to-cover-farmers-limestone-trucking-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/department-of-agriculture-adds-200000-to-cover-farmers-limestone-trucking-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Agriculture adds $200,000 to cover farmers&#8217; limestone trucking costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nova Scotia\u2019s farmers are receiving more funds to help cover increased trucking costs for limestone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.novascotia.ca\/government\/agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Agriculture<\/a> is putting an additional $200,000 into the <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/programs\/limestone-trucking-assistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Limestone Trucking Assistance Program<\/a>, increasing it to a total of $550,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nova Scotia\u2019s annual Limestone Trucking Assistance Program helps Nova Scotia farms defray the cost of trucking limestone that is used to neutralize the acidity of the soil on agricultural land, and improve production efficiencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The limestone program has been around for 35 years, only under different forms and names. Photo contributed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFarmers need to maintain quality soils to be efficient crop producers and adding limestone helps maintain healthy soils for better growing, farmers are encouraged to apply for this additional funding,\u201d said Greg Morrow, MLA for Guysborough-Tracadie, and the Minister of Agriculture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn a typical year, 175 crop farmers use this program so they can truck limestones to the farms and keep their soils neutralized.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tim Marsh, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsfa-fane.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture,<\/a> said that Nova Scotia\u2019s soil is fairly acidic and, while it is great for blueberries, which are one of the biggest crops in the province, it is not functional for other crops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you're growing vegetables for cattle, and grains, you really want to have a good balance of pH in the soil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the last few years, it has been harder for farmers to even cash flow that limestone merchants are getting.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97929\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97929\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-97929\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-400x500.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Marsh, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture is smiling in a self portrait image.\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-400x500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-500x625.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh-172x215.jpg 172w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tim-Marsh.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-97929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim Marsh, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture said limestone is required in Nova Scotia to level the pH balance of the soil, in order to grow different crops and vegetables. Photo contributed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marsh explained the reasons behind the challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEconomics, margins on farms are getting very tight so things have to get chopped out. Fertilizer sales this year are way down because their prices have gone up. It\u2019s frustrating because we all know we need it, but can you afford to buy it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many home gardeners also use and apply limestone to their gardens to keep their soil at a neutral PH for their plants to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMost plants like the pH level around six to seven, preferably seven which is neutral.
