{"id":96859,"date":"2022-05-24T17:49:46","date_gmt":"2022-05-24T21:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=96859"},"modified":"2022-05-24T17:49:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T21:49:46","slug":"its-as-if-youre-not-doing-it-its-happening-an-interview-with-celebrated-musician-janet-hammock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/its-as-if-youre-not-doing-it-its-happening-an-interview-with-celebrated-musician-janet-hammock\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It\u2019s as if you\u2019re not doing it\u2026 it\u2019s happening\u2019: An interview with celebrated musician Janet Hammock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Town of Sackville is honouring a celebrated pianist for her contributions to the local arts and culture scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Janet Hammock is being inducted into the Sackville Arts Wall, a series of plaques overlooking the Waterfowl Park on Main Street.<\/p>\n<p>A jury selects new inductees every two years in recognition of their achievements in the literary, performing and visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth category, Arts Builder, honours citizens or groups that have \"made a significant contribution to the cultural and artistic development of our community.\"<\/p>\n<p>Hammock, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale University, has been named Arts Builder.<\/p>\n<p>She moved to Sackville in 1975 to join the Department of Music at Mount Allison University, where she taught for 26 years.<\/p>\n<p>\"Determined from the outset that music should be a community-wide experience, Janet has conducted public workshops in deep listening, has taught numerous courses for the Tantramar Seniors College, and from 2010 to 2016 published a column entitled Sackville Soundscapes in the weekly Tribune-Post newspaper,\" a citation from the Town of Sackville states.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past seven years, she has also hosted \u201cFly Me to the Moon,\u201d a radio program on CFTA FM in Amherst, N.S. showcasing\u00a0local musicians.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, CHMA interviewed Hammock at her sunlit studio, which is brimming with books and scores of music.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This report include an archived recording of Janet Hammock performing \u201cSonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano\u201d by John Cage, the American composer, whom Hammock knew personally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It also includes Hammock playing \u201cPri\u00e8re,\u201d a song or fragment written by the French composer Erik Satie.
