{"id":94983,"date":"2022-05-12T15:26:59","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=94983"},"modified":"2022-05-12T15:38:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T19:38:02","slug":"halifax-man-sober-after-30-years-of-suffering-from-cocaine-addiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/halifax-man-sober-after-30-years-of-suffering-from-cocaine-addiction\/","title":{"rendered":"Halifax man sober after 30 years of suffering from cocaine addiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018I enjoy getting up and being straight every day, not frightened by addiction.\u2019<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Craig Boutilier started using cocaine when he was 17 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve been doing cocaine for 30 years and I\u2019ve been in and out of jail for about 29 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This month, however, he celebrates his 53<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> birthday on May 3 by staying over 100 days sober.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boutilier said addiction changed his life for the worse because all his thoughts were of what he could steal to satiate his addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe stores knew me well. I was picking up charges and I\u2019ve been in and out of jail about 18 and 19 times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Turning things around for the better, three decades later, Boutilier received help from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newvisionhealthcare.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Visions Program <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Kentville as part of a disability support program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He says the addiction made him feel angry and that since sobriety and joining the program, he is now more \u201ccool, calm and collected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New Visions Program has been around since 1992 and has helped numerous people with mental health issues, mobility issues, disabilities and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boutilier has been a part of this program since the beginning of the year, in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe worked with him to identify what his goal is, based on his needs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2060\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he\u2019s really identified [the] skill set for independent living.
