{"id":9057,"date":"2020-09-05T12:42:37","date_gmt":"2020-09-05T16:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=9057"},"modified":"2020-09-08T10:30:26","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T14:30:26","slug":"explore-next-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/explore-next-door\/","title":{"rendered":"Explore Next Door campaign encourages local tourism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales<\/p>\n<p>Local tourism had really taken a big hit when Mary Ruth Snyder, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/campbellriverchamber.ca\/\">Campbell River Chamber of Commerce<\/a> and Dianne Hawkins, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comoxvalleychamber.com\/\">Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce<\/a>\u00a0agreed to visit each other\u2019s cities and film the event. The pair did not stop there. In particular, McIvor Lake and the Splash Park are becoming increasingly crowded.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#ExploreNextDoor CR &amp; CV\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VDiCsUc9YSg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>By the time the video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VDiCsUc9YSg&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Explore Next Door\u00a0<\/a>was released on Aug.18, the region was in the midst of an uptake in the number of local tourists. Little of this reached sectors more dependent on international tourism, <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tourism-pretty-dire-for-local-kayak-operators\/\">like marine adventure tourism<\/a>, but the Campbell River\u2019s hotel occupancy rate jumped to 70 per cent, which was just about all they could maintain while maintaining COVID-19 protocols.<\/p>\n<h2>Cortes Island<\/h2>\n<p>The influx of visitors reached more remote locations like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/cortes-island-slowly-reopening\/\">Cortes Island<\/a>, where there often appeared to be more tourists than local residents in stores, food outlets and on the beaches. We\u2019re also going to be the same with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/gold-river\/\">Gold River<\/a>\u00a0and possibly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sayward\/\">Sayward<\/a>\u00a0because there is just so much to do here on Vancouver Island. We do not need to go to far away places. We can really encourage people to travel 45 minutes up the road, or ten minutes on the ferry to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/quadra-island\/\">Quadra<\/a>, or another 45 minutes to Cortes. They have the whole day to spend with family and friends. They\u2019ll feel like they\u2019ve been a week and they\u2019ve only been gone a day, but they helped to contribute to the local economy in the same region where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week-end is Labour Day. So what are we going to do?
