medium\">The Strathcona Regional District is launching its active transportation research project this week, beginning with a public survey.\u00a0 The SRD was granted $20,000 last year toward the project for Cortes Island (<a href=\"https:\/\/cortesradio.ca\/grant-to-help-take-stock-of-walking-and-cycling-routes-on-cortes-island\/\">previously reported<\/a>) from the Union of BC Municipalities.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Leading the study for the SRD is Meredith Starkey, Manager of Planning and Parks.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Starkey is expecting the project will involve the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to identify barriers for cyclists and pedestrians on the island's roads. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">She said the research may also involve identifying trail or route connections and supporting more e-bike charging stations on Cortes Island.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">In a previous interview on rural road safety, Steve Earle explained how similar research done on Gabriola Island 10 years ago did result in road improvements for cyclists and pedestrians.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reach the online public survey here: <\/b><a
