{"id":88662,"date":"2022-03-28T12:35:48","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T16:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=88662"},"modified":"2022-03-28T14:20:21","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T18:20:21","slug":"schools-struggle-with-staff-absenteeism-but-role-of-covid-19-unclear-says-teachers-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/schools-struggle-with-staff-absenteeism-but-role-of-covid-19-unclear-says-teachers-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools struggle with staff absenteeism, but role of COVID-19 unclear, says teachers\u2019 union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Brunswick lifted all remaining COVID-19 restrictions just as students returned to classes from March Break two weeks ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some parents have welcomed the end of universal indoor masking at schools.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But others have called for the mandate to remain in place until at least the end of April, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/universal-masking-keeps-students-and-staff-safe-keep-masks-in-nb-schools?utm_content=cl_sharecopy_32598909_en-CA%3A3&amp;recruiter=8154439&amp;recruited_by_id=e5bee6b0-dfc5-012f-0ff1-4040b09128dc&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=copylink&amp;utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_message&amp;utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&amp;share_bandit_exp=message-32598909-en-CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> that had gathered nearly 1,500 virtual signatures by Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously on CHMA, we heard from Kathleen Gadd, a Mount Allison University graduate and mother of three children, one of the petition\u2019s co-authors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She warned about issues including a wave of infections hitting the families of teachers and other staff who might be vulnerable to severe COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, reports have emerged of high rates of staff absenteeism, particularly at schools in the Moncton region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more on this story, CHMA spoke to Connie Keating, president of the New Brunswick Teachers Association and co-president of the New Brunswick Teachers Federation, the union representing teachers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keating is also a longtime teacher who studied at Mount Allison University.
