{"id":88063,"date":"2022-03-23T18:24:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T22:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=88063"},"modified":"2022-03-24T09:53:14","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T13:53:14","slug":"students-renew-call-for-mount-a-to-divest-from-fossil-fuels-ahead-of-climate-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/students-renew-call-for-mount-a-to-divest-from-fossil-fuels-ahead-of-climate-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Students renew call for Mount A to divest from fossil fuels ahead of climate strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climate justice activists at Mount Allison University and their supporters will be getting their hands dirty on Friday as part of student-led climate strike actions happening around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Their handprints will cover a banner painted with images from the fossil fuel industry \u2013 an oil well and two smokestacks belching black smoke \u2013 and bearing the words \u201cPeople Not Profit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do,\u201d said student activist Kate DesRoches. \u201cPut the people over the profit, literally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DesRoches is a member of Divest MTA, a student activist group that campaigns for Mount A to move its investment funds out of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork is part of student-led actions happening internationally as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fridaysforfuture.org\/\">Fridays for Future<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n<p>Divest MTA is part of a movement calling for institutional investors around the world to move trillions of dollars out of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Universities have multimillion dollar funds called endowments which they use to generate cash.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2020, Mount Allison\u2019s endowment was worth more than $170 million, according to information publicly available on the university\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Its holdings include names like Exxon Mobil, the Texas-based multinational oil and gas giant.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the university\u2019s endowment fund had at least $7.4 million in fossil fuel companies by the end of 2019, according to calculations by Divest MTA.<\/p>\n<p>DesRoches said there\u2019s a tension between what students learn in the classroom about climate change, and how the university uses its money.\u00a0You can listen to her interview with CHMA here:<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-88063-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Kate-Desroches-EDIT.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Kate-Desroches-EDIT.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Kate-Desroches-EDIT.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>CHMA also reached out to Mount Allison for comment on Tuesday, but the university couldn\u2019t immediately provide a response.<\/p>\n<p>Its website states the university doesn\u2019t invest directly into individual companies, but rather uses investment managers to invest in \u201cpooled funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student-led action in Sackville begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Crabtree breezeway, followed by a march to Centennial Hall at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate justice activists at Mount Allison University and their supporters will be getting their hands dirty on Friday as part of student-led climate strike actions happening around the world.
