{"id":86520,"date":"2022-03-15T16:48:25","date_gmt":"2022-03-15T20:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=86520"},"modified":"2022-03-24T16:59:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T20:59:07","slug":"original-high-school-program-on-cortes-island-accepting-applications-for-fall-and-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/original-high-school-program-on-cortes-island-accepting-applications-for-fall-and-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Original high school program on Cortes Island accepting applications for fall and winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A unique high school program is coming to Cortes Island this fall, created in collaboration between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sd72.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School District 72<\/a> (SD72) and Cortes parents and volunteers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program, called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cortesislandacademy.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortes Island Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CIA), will provide BC\u2019s core curriculum augmented with place-based education that includes Indigenous learning approaches, hours of outdoor hands-on lessons and direct learning from local experts and entrepreneurs. Facilitators will come from organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reelyouth.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reel Youth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/corteskayaks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Kayaks<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The pilot program will consist of two 10-week sessions called <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Oceans: Marine Conservation, Leadership and Stewardship <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the fall and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elevating Youth Voices<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the program\u2019s website, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cceda.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Community Economic Development Association<\/a> as well as Cortes Island Parent Advisory Committee,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have reported that the previous lack of high school programming was a major barrier to a resilient local economy and youth continuing in their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Listen below to the CKTZ News report with comments from <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Lontayao, SD72\u2019s Coordinator of Student Options and Opportunities, and Manda Aufochs Gillespie, who works for both of the program's partnering organizations Folk University and <a href=\"https:\/\/cortesfoundation.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Island Community Foundation:\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A unique high school program is coming to Cortes Island this fall, created in collaboration between School District 72 (SD72) and Cortes parents and volunteers.
