{"id":85677,"date":"2022-03-10T09:10:25","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T14:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=85677"},"modified":"2022-03-10T09:10:25","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T14:10:25","slug":"ottawa-community-groups-demand-police-renounce-oversight-of-mental-health-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/ottawa-community-groups-demand-police-renounce-oversight-of-mental-health-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa community groups demand police renounce oversight of mental health strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community groups in Ottawa are demanding the removal of the Ottawa Police Service from the guiding council supporting the city\u2019s mental health strategy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a year ago, the city implemented a guiding council to help shape Ottawa\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/en\/news-and-community\/resources\/FINAL-V2-Mental-Health-Response-Strategy-Consultation-Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Ottawa Police handed oversight of the strategy to the city in Jan. 2021 after receiving pressure from various community groups, then took a supervisory role on the guiding council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with CHUO, co-lead of Ottawa\u2019s 613-819 Black Hub, Robin Browne, says the police shouldn\u2019t have any role in the development of a mental health response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe police are a very powerful force,\u201d says Browne. \u201cFor people to challenge the police is a very intimidating thing, so they will have a kind of a\u2026 big influence on what's going on, and they shouldn't have any influence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On behalf of 613-819 Black Hub and several other community groups, Browne <a href=\"https:\/\/613819blackhubnoir.ca\/en\/news\/hub-news-releases\/community-groups-demand-immediate-removal-of-ottawa-police-service-from-group-deciding-which-groups-gets-mental-health-funding\">penned a letter<\/a> on Monday asking the city to omit the Ottawa Police from the list of groups on the guiding council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Browne\u2019s letter to the council includes support from Horizon Ottawa, Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women, Coalition Against More Surveillance, and the Ottawa Black Diaspora Coalition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter suggests that the alternative mental health strategy should be led by \u201cgrassroots organizations with lived experience\u201d rather than the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guiding council\u2019s terms of reference point to \u201crecent OPS interventions\u201d leading to the injury or deaths of Indigenous and Black community members with mental health issues, and promise to restrict police oversight unless an incident involves criminality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Browne refers to the case of Abdirahman Abdi, a mentally ill Somali man who was beaten to death by OPS officer Daniel Montsion in 2016, as an example of why such a plan is doomed to fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople call the police on him, a guy with mental health issues, because he was in a coffee shop allegedly touching women,\u201d says Browne. \u201cNow that's criminality.
