{"id":84535,"date":"2022-03-03T16:45:15","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T21:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=84535"},"modified":"2022-03-03T16:45:15","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T21:45:15","slug":"karsh-masson-gallery-hosts-quadrennial-photographic-art-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/karsh-masson-gallery-hosts-quadrennial-photographic-art-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Karsh-Masson gallery hosts quadrennial photographic art exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A visual art exhibit celebrating innovation in photography and lenswork is arriving at the Karsh-Masson gallery at city hall this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Karsh Continuum exhibition, which only occurs every four years, is open to the public beginning on Thursday. The exhibition hosts emerging visual artists working with a photography-based medium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The participating artists were curated by Andrew Wright, the 2019 recipient of the prestigious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/arts-heritage-and-events\/professional-cultural-awards-and-programs\/karsh-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karsh Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is given in honour of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/karsh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Karsh brothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for their significant contributions to Ottawa\u2019s cultural and artistic landscape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In conversation with the City of Ottawa, Wright explained why he selected the artists.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll three artists engage with photography in an expanded sense,\u201d says Wright. \u201cRecognizing both the utility and the limitations of photography\u2019s established traditions and conceits, they continue to make poignant works where photography is an important yet constituent part of their significance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The three chosen artists will have the opportunity to be mentored by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewwright.ca\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who won the award in 2019 for his artistic manipulation of light and reflection using natural materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 2022 artists selected to participate in the exhibition are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stephanealexis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">St\u00e9phane Alexis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shelbylisk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelby Lisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paluzzi.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Neeko Paluzzi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexis is a Caribbean-Canadian artist based in Ottawa. In his artwork, he combines his own lived experiences and those of \u201cdifferent people and communities that are tucked away due to the hardships they face.\" The work he has on display is a series of conceptual portraits using chicken feet, entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poultry.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would like people to be curious, to look at these images and to think again about what they are seeing and what it can mean,\u201d says Alexis. \u201cIdeally, they would say, \u2018Chicken feet? I didn\u2019t realize that they could look like that,\u2019 or \u2018I had no idea they look so similar to human hands.' So, in this context, they might have to rethink their assumptions about what they thought they already knew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lisk is a Tyendinaga Mohawk multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and photographer from Kenht\u00e8:ke. Her art tells a story about her family and culture, and combines traditional Haudenosaunee art styles with contemporary photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her project for the Karsh Exhibition, called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t\u00f3 na\u2019tesohseriy\u00e0:kon<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">combines traditional beadwork with family photos, each piece representing a different phrase in Mohawk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI feel like this project is more about offering \u2018the dominant culture\u2019 another way to think,\u201d says Lisk. \u201cThat there are other ways to do things. And these ways come from the language of this place, and the land here. These can be ways for all of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queer Canadian artist and educator Paluzzi is based in Ottawa. His work contains both traditional and modern elements, described as \u201cintertextual, photo-based installations.\u201d His exhibition project, entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the nature of time, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is \u201ca visualization of an infamous debate\u201d between Albert Einstein and twentieth century philosopher Henri Bergson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat people see is a video of two faces on top of each other, discussing together, and debating their opposing views concerning the nature of time,\u201d says Paluzzi. \u201cThe video is reacting to itself, and every time you watch it will be slightly different. What I hope is that if someone were to see it once they might have an idea what time is, how it might be described - but when they come back and see it again, the idea that they initially had could be changed as a result of what they\u2019ve newly seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each of the three artists\u2019 work will be on display at the Karsh-Masson gallery until April 1.
