{"id":84004,"date":"2022-03-01T14:45:28","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T19:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=84004"},"modified":"2022-03-02T14:45:51","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T19:45:51","slug":"russo-ukrainian-war-cause-for-concern-for-ottawa-resident-with-family-in-kyiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/russo-ukrainian-war-cause-for-concern-for-ottawa-resident-with-family-in-kyiv\/","title":{"rendered":"Russo-Ukrainian war cause for concern for Ottawa resident with family in Kyiv"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Russian forces continue the invasion into Ukraine, members of Ottawa\u2019s Ukrainian community grow more concerned for their loved-ones back home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russia gathered an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armscontrol.org\/factsheets\/Ukraine-Nuclear-Weapons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">estimated 150,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> troops at the Ukrainian border for weeks while the world looked on with worry, launching an invasion beginning on Thursday. Russian forces are attacking Ukraine from multiple directions, targeting vital infrastructure such as airports and hospitals, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has fully mobilized the Ukrainian military and has called on all able-bodied Ukrainians of fighting age to defend their homeland. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russian forces breached the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michael Kostiuk, a member of Ottawa\u2019s Ukrainian community, has family and friends living in Kyiv. He says the situation in Ukraine has \u201cchanged dramatically\u201d in a short period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA week ago, I was asked about my relatives in Ukraine,\u201d says Kotsiuk. \u201cI said they're probably not going to be endangered because they're in the far west, and the fighting was probably going to be around\u2026 the far east.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a \u201cmilitary operation\u201d would be launched in the eastern region of Ukraine in the disputed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/261051?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Donbas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> territory.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Putin has framed the invasion as self-defence, claiming his intention is not to occupy Ukraine but to ensure the \u201cdemilitarization and de-Nazification\u201d of the country, whose president is Jewish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kostiuk, who had been communicating regularly with his family in Kyiv prior to Thursday, says he hasn\u2019t heard from them since the invasion began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey live basically right beside the airport, which was hit by rockets,\u201d says Kostiuk. \u201cI don't know if they hit the street of houses where my relatives are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kostiuk, who has several degrees in geography and Slavic studies with a specialization in Ukrainian, understands the complexity of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict on both a personal and academic level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was studying at a university in Kyiv in 1991 when the communist Soviet Union disbanded and was reformed into 12 independent republics, including Russia and Ukraine. Kostiuk recalls a sense of optimism shared among Ukrainians at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTheir perspective was [that] an independent Ukraine was going to be prosperous, and they'd be better off economically,\u201d says Kostiuk. \u201cAnd that's kind of the driving force for many people\u2014a better economic situation, and improved quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now an independent constitutional republic with a distinct sense of national identity, Ukraine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mil.gov.ua\/en\/news\/2022\/02\/26\/address-by-the-deputy-minister-of-defence-of-ukraine-hanna-maliar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">showing no signs of yielding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the state bearing down on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Friday, Russian forces captured the southern city of Kherson, which Ukrainians reclaimed over the weekend. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/ukraine-conflict-update-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institute for the Study of War<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (ISW), the Russian push into Kyiv and the Northeast between Chernihiv and Kharkiv was paused over the weekend to allow additional troops and supplies to arrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Men aged 18 to 60 have been forbidden from fleeing Ukraine, and have been instructed to stay behind to aid the war effort. On Sunday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceU\/status\/1498260544733724674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zelenskyy called on<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> residents of foreign nations to join the newly created \u201cInternational Legion\u201d, a militia of volunteers intended to \u201cprotect world security from the Putin regime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although Russia\u2019s military strength <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/in-brief\/how-do-militaries-russia-and-ukraine-stack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is superior to Ukraine\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, bolstered by aid from Belarusian forces and with support from separatists in the Donbas region, Ukrainians say <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n2fYMDhbqbo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they refuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to surrender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kostiuk says Ukrainians are unlikely to give up their independence willingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey've had their independence since \u201891,\u201d he says. \u201cThey're just going to keep fighting and fighting. Putin thinks Ukraine is just going to roll over. No, it's not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amidst sanctions and strong words from world leaders, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/world-monde\/international_relations-relations_internationales\/sanctions\/russia-russie.aspx?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> imposed by Canada, Putin has put Russia\u2019s nuclear and strategic missile forces on their highest alert status. He has threatened that direct military action against Russia would result in \u201cconsequences they have never seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Sunday, the United Nations responded to Russia\u2019s nuclear threats <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=28165&amp;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by calling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a rare emergency meeting of the General Assembly to be held the following day. During the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?518240-1\/un-general-assembly-meeting-russias-invasion-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, member nations condemned Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine and urged Putin to withdraw his forces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Countries in close proximity to Russia, such as Germany and Lithuania, expressed a fear that they would become future victims of Russian conquest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russian aggression against Ukraine, exemplified by its 2014 annexation of Crimea, is rooted in the breakup of the Soviet Union. Most of Ukraine was part of the former Russian Empire, later the communist Soviet Union, then called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Ukraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (S.S.R.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russia has long been opposed to Ukraine\u2019s independence, challenging the republic\u2019s attempts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). As recently as December 2021, Putin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/dec\/17\/russia-issues-list-demands-tensions-europe-ukraine-nato\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sent a correspondence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the United States demanding that Ukraine be banned from joining NATO. The demands, which were rejected by the U.S. and NATO, also required that NATO withdraw weapons and supplies from countries which entered the alliance after 1997, many of which are former Soviet Union member states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many believe that Putin\u2019s ultimate objective is to resurrect and reunify the Soviet Union, a goal which Kostiuk calls \u201ca fantasy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou have a European-oriented country versus a Eurasian mentality, and that itself differentiates them quite a bit,\u201d says Kostiuk. \u201cThey have different histories and different dynamics there. So for Putin to say that Ukraine is part of Russia - no, it isn't. Maybe it's good for a speech, but it's not really based in reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Monday, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmu.gov.ua\/en\/news\/zvernennya-premyer-ministra-denisa-shmigalya28022022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ukrainian government announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> its application to the European Union via \u201ca special procedure.\u201d Membership to the EU would provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/about-parliament\/en\/democracy-and-human-rights\/fundamental-rights-in-the-eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stronger protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the democratic rights and freedoms of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an unprecedented move, the EU says it will supply Ukraine with firearms to combat Russian aggression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other European nations, such as Poland and Romania, which are close neighbours of Ukraine, have stepped in to shelter hundreds of thousands of displaced Ukrainians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UN reported on Monday that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/audio\/2022\/02\/1112902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">half a million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> refugees have already fled, with many more expected to lose their homes in the coming days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kostiuk, whose loved ones may be among the refugees, says those who have managed to flee to safety are in danger of losing their homes for good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAnytime there's a massive exodus of people, what happens to the property?\u201d says Kostiuk. It\u2019s someone else who's going to get their property, which is what could possibly happen if the Russians try to take over the entire country. It's a heartbreak for the people, because who are they leaving behind?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As of Sunday, the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported 352 civilian casualties and 1,684 injuries. Dozens more were reported dead on Monday after Russian forces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60560465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">attacked Kharkiv, according to the BBC.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talks on Monday between Kyiv and Moscow resulted in both parties agreeing to continue negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the CHUO News story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Russian forces continue the invasion into Ukraine, members of Ottawa\u2019s Ukrainian community grow more concerned for their loved-ones back home.
