{"id":83873,"date":"2022-02-28T15:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T20:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=83873"},"modified":"2022-02-28T15:00:38","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T20:00:38","slug":"friends-of-cortes-island-society-launches-western-screech-owl-research-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/friends-of-cortes-island-society-launches-western-screech-owl-research-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends of Cortes Island Society launches Western Screech Owl research project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With funding from the BC government, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conservation and education society is taking part in a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/a100.gov.bc.ca\/pub\/eirs\/finishDownloadDocument.do;jsessionid=D15A2CBE4AC6257566B582A3273DFEC4?subdocumentId=9381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cthreatened species\u201d field research project<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aimed at determining the local status of the Western Screech Owl. The launch began with a public notice to Cortes Islanders on February 23rd and includes an evening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show14313a\/Western_Screech_Owl_Project_Takes_Flight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presentation with a field biologist on March 7th.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Executive Director Helen Hall says data is relayed directly to government biologists who interpret the information. It\u2019s used to inform conservation efforts, which can include protecting sensitive habitats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hall says two data collection systems are used, conveying much information about the ecosystem studied beyond the primary species focused on. Both systems are auditory: one plays the owl\u2019s call for potential responses in habitat preferred by the owls, and the other records all sound within range of a recorder for two weeks, in targeted locations, creating an audio landscape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The just launched FOCI coordinated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/cgi-bin\/tideline\/show_article_attachment.cgi?TY=ar&amp;ID=14313&amp;F=Friends_of_Cortes_Island_Western_Screech_Owl_Project_Final.pdf&amp;X=1646031316000\/Friends_of_Cortes_Island_Western_Screech_Owl_Project_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Western Screech Owl project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> includes four of the Discovery islands, located between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island: Cortes, Read, Sonora, and Maurelle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hall is hopeful FOCI\u2019s application for an additional two years of gathering data on the Western Screech Owl and its shared ecosystem will be approved so that observing species and their environment over time provides useful insights into our changing world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Find out more in the CKTZ News report below:<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With funding from the BC government, the Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI) conservation and education society is taking part in a \u201cthreatened species\u201d field research project aimed at determining the local status of the Western Screech Owl.
