{"id":8373,"date":"2020-08-22T17:45:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-22T21:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=8373"},"modified":"2020-08-31T14:29:14","modified_gmt":"2020-08-31T18:29:14","slug":"reinventing-hollyhock-for-a-virtual-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/reinventing-hollyhock-for-a-virtual-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Reinventing Hollyhock for a virtual world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales<\/p>\n<p>In a normal year, <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-island\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-island\/\">Cortes Island<\/a>\u2019s best known learning centre needs to take in $3-million in revenues to keep operating. 2020 has been anything but normal. As a result of <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/covid-19-2\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/covid-19-2\/\">COVID-19<\/a>, most of this year\u2019s programs were cancelled and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/hollyhock\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/hollyhock\/\">Hollyhock<\/a> could not rehire most of its usual staff. This has also been a year of innovations: with courses being offered online for the first time, and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hollyhock.ca\/shinethelight\/\">day-long virtual Hollyhock-a-thon called \u2018Shine the Light.<\/a>\u2019 The Cortes Island centre\u2019s response to this year\u2019s challenges almost amounts to reinventing Hollyhock for a virtual world.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div id=\"attachment_8381\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-20-at-11.34.27-AM-e1598736972663.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8381\" class=\"wp-image-8381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-20-at-11.34.27-AM-e1598736972663.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy BIll Weaver, Across Borders Media<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">Hollyhock\u2019s future<\/h2>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHollyhock will survive, there is no doubt about that. Has it been a disaster? Well, in some ways \u2013 yes. We have gone from +$3 million in revenue to $300,000 in earned revenue through our programming.That\u2019s pretty catastrophic,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hollyhock.ca\/about\/people\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hollyhock.ca\/about\/people\/\">Penelope Naldrett<\/a>, in charge of fund raising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the Hollyhock of the future will be different and what the world needs is different,\" she added. \"There is no doubt in my mind that people will always gather at Hollyhock. Next year, we are already planning for less people. Until this year, we were always trying to fill the campus \u2013 80 to 100 people [per program]. Next year, it is less. In 2021: We know we won\u2019t be gathering in large groups, but we hope to be gathering in smaller groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><\/div><figcaption><em>Courtesy BIll Weaver, Across Borders Media<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The year that wasn\u2019t<\/h2>\n<p>For most of the first quarter, it looked like this would be Hollyhock\u2019s best year ever. Registrations were trending 20 per cent above 2019, which was itself a record year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continued to stay grounded in our roots as an organization, with wisdom traditions, spiritual traditions, mindfulness and leadership. It is still a joyful garden to walk through and you still hear laughter on the beach. As people registered to book in and get the ZOOM link, they started donating \u2026 So then we realized, people are getting something out of this. Then we just started putting out more and more free content,\u201d said Ling Lo.<\/p>\n<p>This led to the decision to host paid virtual programming. A three day Social venture institute conference was held in April. Some of Hollyhock\u2019s presenters went virtual.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_87625\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87625\" class=\"wp-image-87625\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-20-at-11.43.40-AM-800x451.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-87625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy BIll Weaver, Across Borders Media<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The Hollyhock-a-thon<\/h2>\n<p>On June 20, 2020, Hollyhock hosted its first Hollyhock-a-thon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur donors showed up from around the world. It was a ten hour event. Over 650 people attended throughout the day. Over 300 donations were made and we raised over $200,000,\u201d said Naldrett, who connected to the event from her home on Bowen Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the donations coming in were $50, $100. Really wonderful, but they were trickling in. Normally, your larger gifts come from someone you know well. Then someone I had not met, but was involved with Hollyhock a number of years ago, came froward with $5,000. That was a big boost and set a different pace. Then later there was a match offered and the same donor stepped up with $10,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People stayed connected throughout the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saw all\u00a0 the hiccups, because there were hiccups. Streaming live from Cortes isn\u2019t always easy. They got to see some of our newer presenters, and hear their wise words. They got to hear some of our favourites, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/ann-mortifee\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/ann-mortifee\/\">Anne Mortifee<\/a>\u00a0\u2026 I think that whole day was moving because people weren\u2019t just sharing their donations, they were sharing their love for Hollyhock.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img class=\"wp-image-87619\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-20-at-11.23.18-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" \/><figcaption>Courtesy BIll Weaver, Across Borders Media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Reinventing Hollyhock<\/h2>\n<p>The surplus Hollyhock acquired in 2019 is gone.<\/p>\n<p>Between donations and their online programs, the centre has raised close to $500,000 so far this year. This is not enough to prevent them from operating from a deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Naldrett says that, even operating with a smaller crew, they need another half million dollars\u00a0 by April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strategic planning is how to raise the next $500,000. We have seen an increase in individual donors, but typically almost 40% of funds raised are from corporate sponsors who are predominantly supporting larger conferences. We have had to cancel two of our conferences and have moved Social Venture Institute to an online offering, and we know that they will be modified again in 2021,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Lo added, \u201cStrategically, we are doing everything we can to insulate ourselves from having another 2020 experience in March and realizing at that point that the driver of our revenue, being the programming, was going to evaporate. We don\u2019t want to be in that position again. We don\u2019t know if there will be a second wave or when it will be safe to welcome people to Cortes again. We\u2019re very conscious of not wanting to do that, even if provincial regulations say it is okay. This is a very special remote community with limited resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They are planning an \u2018in person\u2019 season for April to October 2021, but also intend to have a robust virtual season.<\/p>\n<p>Ling explained, \u201cWe realized that we host virtual space really well and we can do a lot of the transformational work on a digital platform.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales In a normal year, Cortes Island\u2019s best known learning centre needs to take in $3-million in revenues to keep operating. 2020 has been anything but normal.
