{"id":82866,"date":"2022-02-22T17:28:32","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T22:28:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=82866"},"modified":"2022-02-22T17:28:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T22:28:32","slug":"siu-investigating-after-woman-seriously-injured-in-incident-with-toronto-police-officer-on-horseback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/siu-investigating-after-woman-seriously-injured-in-incident-with-toronto-police-officer-on-horseback\/","title":{"rendered":"SIU investigating after woman seriously injured in incident with Toronto police officer on horseback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ontario\u2019s police watchdog is investigating an incident that left a woman seriously injured after being knocked down by a police horse in downtown Ottawa on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siu.on.ca\/siu-investigating-reported-serious-injury-of-woman-in-interaction-with-police-horse-less-lethal-firearm-discharges-at-ottawa-demonstrations-en7495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">indicated on Sunday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that they are looking into an incident between a Toronto Police Officer and a 49-year-old Ottawa woman who has reported \u201cserious injury.\u201d The incident occurred Friday evening at the intersection of Rideau Strteet and Mackenzie Avenue, close to the Chateau Laurier, when police officers mounted on horses attempted to disperse a large crowd of protestors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the weekend, stories of an elderly woman with a walker being trampled to death by mounted police officers circulated social media. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AsN-5EFM2FU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video taken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the scene shows an older woman in a red jacket facing off with police officers before several officers on horseback rushed in to clear the demonstrators away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The woman, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=roberta%20paulsen&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dubbed \u201cRoberta Paulsen\u201d <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by some who shared the story, was reported to have died of her injuries. Photo by Courtney Snyder.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interim Police Chief Steve Bell confirmed on Saturday that two protesters fell after mounted officers were sent in to disperse an \u201cincreasingly aggressive\u201d crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMembers of the mounted public order unit rode through the crowd, created separation and lowered the temperature,\u201d says Bell. \u201cWhat I can indicate is there was two\u2026 protesters who did collide with the horses, they fell down, they immediately got back up and started engaging in demonstration activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The woman\u2019s death was falsely reported on Fox News by contributor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaraCarterDC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sara Carter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In the days following, reports of the woman\u2019s death went viral.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The woman in the video has since been identified <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/courtneynicolesnyder\/posts\/10160165069989511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by family members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as Candice Sero, a member of Tyendinaga Mohawk First Nation. The clash with the police horse reportedly left her with a broken clavicle, which she was later treated for at the Monfort Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRoberta Paulsen\u201d, the name originally used to identify the woman, is believed to be a fictional name derived from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0137523\/characters\/nm0001533\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fight Club.<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Ashli Babbit, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefocus.news\/celebrity\/roberta-paulson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">US veteran who died<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from a gunshot injury following the Capitol riots of Jan. 6, 2021, was also falsely named Roberta Paulsen by users on Reddit and 4chan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CaKY2noLn8a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instagram video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> shows Sero after the incident, seemingly in good spirits as she is being pushed in a wheelchair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHUO reached out to the SIU for comment regarding the investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SIU representative Kristy Denette could not confirm whether or not the 49-year-old injured woman was Sero, but told CHUO that as of Monday, there is only one serious injury under investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The SIU is also investigating a separate incident after members of the Vancouver police force discharged a \u201cless-lethal\u201d weapon at individuals near Sparks Street and Bank Street.
