{"id":82575,"date":"2022-02-18T17:27:09","date_gmt":"2022-02-18T22:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=82575"},"modified":"2022-02-22T17:27:26","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T22:27:26","slug":"interim-police-chief-confident-ops-now-has-sufficient-resources-to-end-occupation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/interim-police-chief-confident-ops-now-has-sufficient-resources-to-end-occupation\/","title":{"rendered":"Interim police chief confident OPS now has sufficient resources to end occupation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ottawa Police Service is bracing for a fourth weekend of protests in the downtown core, saying they are now well-equipped to end the occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ottawa police has struggled to handle the influx of thousands of demonstrators flooding the downtown core beginning in late January. In the following weeks, police managed to oversee the departure of many of the protesters, reinforced by police from multiple other jurisdictions, including OPP and RCMP.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a special meeting of city council on Wednesday afternoon, deputy police chief Steve Bell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=1e4940bf-a4cc-47b8-a22a-a3975191957a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that the police service now has \u201call the resources it needs\u201d to remove the remaining protesters downtown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe've been able to get the resource requests that we've been asking for and we're able to pull together the resources that we need to successfully and safely and the occupation,\u201d says Bell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bell told council on Wednesday that he was unable to publicly share details of the plan to end the occupation, but called the approach \u201cmethodical and well resourced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amidst heavy criticism from residents and city officials for his mishandling of the occupation, former Police Chief Peter Sloly resigned on Tuesday. Bell was subsequently named as interim police chief, and is now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=0aae45ba-df82-490c-9bf6-a17426127c30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">leading the operation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the downtown core.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When pressed by councillors on whether he supported the strategy created by his predecessor, Bell defended the police service\u2019s commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am absolutely invested to work with our partners to end this occupation,\u201d says Bell. \u201cKnow that I represent that on behalf of every member of our police service who is invested in ending this occupation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The presence of children in the \u201cred zone\u201d of the occupation\u2014the main area where demonstrations are occurring downtown\u2014has presented challenges for police, according to Bell. He says police continue working with Children\u2019s Aid Society and other child and youth welfare agencies to remove children from the red zone before the remainder of the convoy is forcibly dismantled. Additionally, demonstrators bringing minors into the red zone could be fined up to 5,000 dollars in accordance with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=1bc1b5ab-51e3-4860-8937-b181d4475989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new temporary legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> under the Emergency Measures Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ottawa Police Services Board (OPSB) saw turnover following Sloly's resignation. A motion to replace Coun. Diane Deans as chair of the OPSB was passed on Wednesday after it was alleged that she had circumvented the official hiring process to select an interim chief. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa\u2019s first and only Black councillor, Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward\u2019s Rawlson King, tendered his resignation from the OPSB on Wednesday, along with Coun. Carol-Ann Meehan and member Sandy Smallwood. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">King cited Deans\u2019 dismissal as the reason for his resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUnder her leadership of the board, she committed to doing things differently, and undertook exploring more innovative and progressive approaches to community safety and wellbeing to produce better outcomes for everyone residing in the City of Ottawa,\u201d says King.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/news\/council-takes-further-action-response-ongoing-demonstration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reformed OPSB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> met on Thursday, with Coun. Eli El-Chantiry replacing Deans as chair. Kitchissippi Ward Coun. Jeff Leiper took King\u2019s seat on the board and resident Suzanne Valiquet replaced Smallwood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bell delivered an update to the board on Thursday, cautioning residents to only approach occupied areas for essential reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOnly those with lawful reasons to enter the core such as residents, businesses, and others with lawful reasons will be allowed into that area,\u201d says Bell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He indicated that unlawful protesters would be given the option to leave, but that \u201cthere will be consequences\u201d for those who remain.
