{"id":82106,"date":"2022-03-04T18:00:58","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T23:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=82106"},"modified":"2022-03-09T09:53:18","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T14:53:18","slug":"opioid-harm-reduction-in-toronto-takes-many-forms-at-its-best-according-to-advocates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/opioid-harm-reduction-in-toronto-takes-many-forms-at-its-best-according-to-advocates\/","title":{"rendered":"Opioid harm reduction in Toronto takes many forms at its best, according to advocates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Jess Goldson<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community and public health harm reduction services save lives amidst abstinence bias<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Juno Zavitz of <a href=\"https:\/\/breakawaycs.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breakaway Community Services<\/a> and Hayley Thompson of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdpe.org\/project\/drug-checking-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Drug Checking Service<\/a> speak to the urgency and importance of diversifying harm reduction strategies in the Toronto opioid crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zavitz, the program coordinator of Breakaway\u2019s grief, loss, and wellness initiative outlines the impact of COVID-19 on the opioid crisis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe biggest impact has been the increase of fatal overdoses that we've seen as a result of people having to isolate or being forced into isolation when using [\u2026] even more risky forms of fentanyl analogs that have been increasingly volatile and increasingly unpredictable,\u201d says Zavitz.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A drug analog is an imitation of a drug that we normally see in the unregulated drug supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson, the project manager of Toronto's Drug Checking Service, speaks to the high rates of contamination of the drug supply. Drug checking allows drug using people to confirm whether the purchased unregulated drug contains what they expect. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know from our samples checked that only 5 per cent of fentanyl substances that have been submitted to the service only contained fentanyl, which means that the other 95 per cent of the samples that we've checked did not align with service user\u2019s expectations because it included drugs other than fentanyl,\u201d adds Thompson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson highlights key substances in the adulteration or contamination of opioids. Contamination refers to the addition of a drug to the original substance that the drug using person does not expect to be present. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[...] Benzodiazepine related drugs [\u2026] present in about 65 per cent of fentanyl samples checked. These drugs put people in dangerous risk of vital suppression \u2014 slowing down of breathing, blood pressure, heart rate. So we're seeing this in conjunction with a high number of opioid or overdose related deaths,\u201d says Thompson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson shares that the Drug Checking Service allows both drug using people and harm reduction specialists to prepare for potential adverse effects or overdoses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>To hear more, listen to the interview below.
