Photo by Anastasia Avvakumova.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The wetland restoration project came out of lake-monitoring work done in 2014 by Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI), which identified the need for reducing sediment flowing into Gunflint and Hague Lakes, where it was causing seasonal algae bloom. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linnaeafarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linnaea Farm<\/a> was chosen in 2020 as a perfect partner and place to begin the work of restoring areas of land that had been ditched and drained for farming to its original wetland ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The work last Saturday consisted of planting live stakes\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">live cuttings from trees\u2014along the banks of the creek to prevent soil erosion and provide habitat for wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82133\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/IMG_5013.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"The species planted were willow, black cottonwood, twinberry, elderberry and red osier dogwood.
