{"id":81816,"date":"2022-02-14T16:58:37","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T21:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=81816"},"modified":"2022-02-16T16:59:07","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T21:59:07","slug":"former-ottawa-resident-fearful-of-legal-consequences-following-unresolved-police-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/former-ottawa-resident-fearful-of-legal-consequences-following-unresolved-police-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Ottawa resident fearful of legal consequences following unresolved police report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Ottawa native living across the border now fears legal rep<\/span>ercussions after reporting\u00a0online threats from convoy supporters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Born and raised in Ottawa, Julie-Ann Pauline moved to Niagara Falls, New York in 2019, after marrying her American husband. She returned to see family and friends last week, a visit she had been planning for over a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHUO spoke with Pauline, who is now back at her home in NY, on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I left Ottawa, I thought I was going to be able to come back and forth as much as I wanted, <\/span>and then the borders closed for the pandemic,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cI've been so cut off for so long. And, finally, I'm starting to be able to come back and see my friends and family more and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline, who had been following Ottawa news concerning the ongoing occupation, says she tuned into last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I_6CfY_IKVw&amp;t=21498s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monday\u2019s city council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> meeting for more information. Finding herself impressed with the measures that came from the meeting, Pauline took to social media to voice her approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a comment on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cityofottawa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">City of Ottawa Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> post updating the public on new measures against the convoy, Pauline said she was, \u201cgrateful for the hard work that\u2019s been put in.\u201d She received several negative responses from what appeared to be convoy supporters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_81838\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81838\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81838\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/neg-comment.jpg\" alt=\"A Facebook comment reply that seems to be in support of the Ottawa occupation.\" width=\"363\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/neg-comment.jpg 363w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/neg-comment-320x201.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-81838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pauline received responses to her post that she felt were threatening. Photo by Julie-Ann Pauline.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It wasn\u2019t until someone left a comment threatening to find her location and \u201cpark on your front lawn for a week with air horns blowing\u201d that Pauline started to fear for her personal safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe thing about looking up my address really freaked me out,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cBecause the week prior, I had shared a picture of my house in Niagara Falls with a Canada flag and American flag on my porch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline decided to disengage, turning off notifications and changing her privacy settings to \u201cfriends only.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After arriving in Ottawa on Wednesday, Pauline was notified by several of her friends that someone was pretending to be her,<\/span>\u00a0sending messages via Facebook using a fake profile. One of the messages asked a friend of Pauline to purchase them a Steam gift card.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline says she also received fraudulent friend requests from two accounts pretending to be someone she knew from church.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAnd I'm like, \u2018Alright, so now they're trying to hack people,\u2019\u201d says Pauline. \u201cThis feels targeted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline proceeded to contact the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/en\/contact-us\/find-a-police-station.aspx?_mid_=2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa Police Service\u2019s non-emergency line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. She was greeted by an automated message which informed her she would hear back within 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI said I was getting online threats and I wasn't sure how to go about reporting it, please call me back,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cI was like, \u2018I'm a former resident of Ottawa currently in the city.\u2019 I gave my current name and my maiden name, and I gave my phone number. This was on Wednesday. They've never called me back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"wp-image-81832 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-225x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-225x500.png 225w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-691x1536.png 691w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-922x2048.png 922w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-500x1111.png 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-461x1024.png 461w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n-97x215.png 97w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/261763418_625499558530747_4643105390462430965_n.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline says she is now fearful she will face legal repercussions for reporting the threats, since she made the call to Ottawa Police from a NY area code.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Thursday, Ottawa Police stated <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OttawaPolice\/status\/1491788988654383115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via Twitter<\/a> that they \u201care aware of a concerted effort to flood our 911 and non-emergency policing reporting line.\u201d The tweet added that scam calls would be traced and perpetrators would be criminally charged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline, whose green card status is up for renewal in the coming months, is afraid the consequences of being lumped in with unlawful protests will damage her immigration process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNow I'm worried\u2026that I've just been put in a pile of these other people they're going to go after for false reporting charges,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cWhich would be really bad if that comes back to bite me later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ottawa Police <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=6a1ea331-1152-4592-a365-884abcd8778c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that they have so far received over 1,000 reports of criminal activity associated with the convoy, and they are pursuing each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHUO reached out to the Ottawa Police, but they did not respond before this story went to air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pauline, who drives with American plates, says she is hesitant to return again after experiencing hostility from fellow drivers who assumed she belonged to the occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was getting tailgated,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cPeople were aggressively swerving and changing lanes around me. I got flipped off. People were yelling at me at red lights. I had to be so on guard when I was driving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a resident of Canada\u2019s capital for 26 years, Pauline says she has, \u201cnever seen something like this.\u201d She understands the frustrations of Ottawa residents, but is also fearful that the occupation has permanently scarred a once welcoming city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe pandemic is winding down, but I still feel like now there's this new barrier,\u201d says Pauline. \u201cBecause now Ottawans have a distrust of outsiders. And suddenly, I'm an outsider, even though I'm not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ottawa Police said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=64873352-2809-47ce-bc46-f57f4bf05d45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">over the weekend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that they continue, \u201cplanning with all levels of government to bring an end to the current occupation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the CHUO story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ottawa native living across the border now fears legal repercussions after reporting\u00a0online threats from convoy supporters.
