{"id":80772,"date":"2021-11-08T15:26:15","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T20:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=80772"},"modified":"2022-02-07T15:43:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T20:43:12","slug":"indigenous-veterans-day-honouring-those-who-served-in-canadas-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/indigenous-veterans-day-honouring-those-who-served-in-canadas-military\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Veteran\u2019s Day: Honouring Those Who Served in Canada\u2019s Military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day, recognizing First Nations, Inuit, and Metis contributions to Canada\u2019s military. <\/p>\n<p>Despite their services, it\u2019s not until 1995 that Indigenous Peoples were permitted to lay Remembrance Day wreaths at the National War Memorial to remember and honour their dead comrades. <\/p>\n<p>Recently, Gunargie O\u2019Sullivan spoke to Carolyn Orazietti, one of the organizers of this year's ceremony at the Victory square cenotaph, a small private event this year, due to covid concerns. <\/p>\n<p>Orazietti is a Mi\u2019kmaq elder who joined the 22 Service Battalion, part of the Canadian Army Reserve, spending three years there. <\/p>\n<p>She speaks about how important it is \u201cto be able to honor the lineage of veterans and all those who served.\u201d A frequent question Orazietti gets is why did the Indigenous people go to bat for. \u201cWe, our people, we\u2019re natural-born fighters. So our warriors excelled in every way. We were schooling the troops\u2026.And our veterans laid down their lives so that we could have a happy and prosperous life,\u201d she says.
