{"id":80139,"date":"2022-02-03T12:17:16","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T17:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=80139"},"modified":"2022-02-03T12:17:16","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T17:17:16","slug":"ottawa-police-report-city-still-gridlocked-but-situation-is-improving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/ottawa-police-report-city-still-gridlocked-but-situation-is-improving\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa police report city still gridlocked, but situation is improving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ottawa Police Service says most demonstrators at Parliament Hill have dispersed, but those who remain are, \u201chighly determined and highly volatile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since arriving in Ottawa over the weekend, the convoy of truckers demanding an end to all COVID-19 mandates and restrictions has gained national attention, as well as the ire of Ottawa residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa police estimate there were between 8,000 and 15,000 people, and thousands of trucks in Ottawa\u2019s downtown core over the past weekend. Now, they say \u201cseveral hundred\u201d trucks remain, and the demonstrators\u2019 numbers are dwindling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa police say this is in part due to their \u201cmeasured approach\u201d to negotiations with the truckers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Wednesday, the city and the Ottawa Police Service delivered an update to the public, during which Acting Deputy Police Chief Trisha Ferguson told residents the police were taking a \u201cmeasured approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSuccessful negotiations by our police liaison team has resulted in cooperation with some truck operators, and has led to the reopening of some key roadways and bridges,\u201d says Ferguson. \u201cI want to stress that the results and opening up routes are due to patient negotiations with demonstration organizers and individual truck operators, and these are ongoing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=f915d2c2-0ca0-4258-b821-837fb901be04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several arrests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been made in relation to the demonstrations, and the Ottawa Police say there will be more to come. On Wednesday, Police Chief Peter Sloly told residents they would find and charge \u201cbad actors\u201d\u2014even those who live out of province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are consequences for your behaviour,\u201d says Sloly. \u201cIt does not matter how long it takes. We will find those who committed the criminal acts and we will lay charges against them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Police are currently investigating 25 other incidents related to the demonstrations.
