{"id":79769,"date":"2022-02-01T07:14:36","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T12:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=79769"},"modified":"2022-01-31T20:15:07","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T01:15:07","slug":"indigenous-vaccination-hub-at-wabano-centre-reopens-in-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/indigenous-vaccination-hub-at-wabano-centre-reopens-in-february\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Vaccination Hub at Wabano Centre reopens in February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wabano Centre is reopening its Indigenous Vaccination Hub in partnership with Ottawa Public Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wabano Centre, located at 299 Montreal Rd., is an urban health centre serving Ottawa\u2019s Indigenous community. Since February 2021, the health centre has periodically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/en\/public-health-topics\/covid-19-vaccine.aspx#First-Nations-Inuit-and-Mtis-Clinics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hosted on-site pop-up clinics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offering vaccines to Indigenous residents and their non-Indigenous household members, beginning with those aged 70 and older and gradually expanding to those aged five and older. The clinic has been operating on a limited basis for most of the month of January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Wabano\u2019s website, the clinic will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 1. Appointments aren\u2019t necessary, but are encouraged due to a high demand for vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/Modules\/News\/blogcomments.aspx?BlogId=70351679-7fff-4e30-b5c4-b0b8e1ac0d9d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">partnership with Ottawa Public Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is intended to help boost the vaccination rate among Ottawa\u2019s Indigenous communities, which have statistically lower willingness to be vaccinated than the overall Canadian population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Statistics Canada data from March 2021 (updated August 2021), the rate of willingness to receive the vaccine among Canada\u2019s Indigenous communities is 71.9 per cent\u2014 slightly lower than the national average (76.9 per cent). Currently, there is no data available concerning the vaccination rate among Indigenous communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sac-isc.gc.ca\/eng\/1617991515859\/1617991548784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a total of 687 Indigenous communities in Canada are reporting on vaccinations as of January 2022, with a total of 1,043,188 first, second, and third doses administered to members of Indigenous communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ISC is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sac-isc.gc.ca\/eng\/1606941379837\/1606941507767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">working in partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with provincial and territorial governments to reach Indigenous communities, but they aren\u2019t handling the rollout in urban communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wabano continues to encourage vaccination among Indigenous residents, offering information on the safety and efficacy of vaccines to vaccine-hesitant members of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you have been hesitant about receiving your vaccine, or have any COVID-19 vaccine-related questions, now is the time to come by and speak directly to a public health nurse to alleviate any concerns,\u201d reads an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wabano.com\/wabano-indigenous-vaccination-hub\/?mc_cid=cbcbb63bfc&amp;mc_eid=82728eaf25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announcement from Wabano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1001301\/ontario-expanding-specialized-covid-19-vaccine-supports-for-indigenous-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">provincial government announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in December that they would invest $30 million in the vaccine rollout to Indigenous communities, including $10 million dollars for urban-Indigenous communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The press release from the Ontario government stated that the province would work collaboratively with \u201ckey urban Indigenous healthcare partners.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Ottawa, the Wabano Centre has been identified as one of those partners, but Ottawa Public Health is also working closely with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aifht.ca\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team (AIFHT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, located at 24 Selkirk St. in Vanier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Akausivik offers health services to Ottawa\u2019s Inuit community, including doses one, two, and three of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aifht.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Akausivik-Inuit-Family-Health-Team-Vaccination-Underway-English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for ages five and older.
