{"id":79033,"date":"2022-01-26T18:49:02","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T23:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=79033"},"modified":"2022-01-26T18:49:02","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T23:49:02","slug":"cortes-island-environmental-non-profit-hosts-annual-general-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/cortes-island-environmental-non-profit-hosts-annual-general-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortes Island environmental non-profit hosts annual general meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The charitable environmental protection organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> held their annual general meeting (AGM) on Jan. 20, which included presentations of project progress in 2021 and a significant change to the board of directors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was FOCI\u2019s 32nd AGM, according to President Max Thaysen, who got involved 12 years ago and said \u201cthere is no work more meaningful in these times.\u201d There were a total of 16 participants at the virtual meeting, including staff, project managers and members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thaysen gave a president\u2019s report at the beginning, framing FOCI's work in the context of the time period unofficially known as the \"<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/anthropocene\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anthropocene Epoch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\" which marks the span of Earth\u2019s history with significant human impact on the planet\u2019s ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There were presentations about FOCI's work last year, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/media-room\/dillon-creek-wetland-restoration-project-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dillon Creek wetland restoration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the land trust of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linnaeafarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Linnaea Farm<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marine stewardship activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forage fish monitoring<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Western screech owl project<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Streamkeepers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_79037\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-20-at-4.16.23-PM.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"The goals and education for Dillon Creek wetland restoration. Image courtesy of Friends of Cortes Island.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thaysen said FOCI\u2019s public events were still decreased due to the pandemic, but there were guided naturalist walks, a film screening and a Firewise event that taught low tech cost effective water storage techniques, the recording of which is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Executive Director <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helen Hall then named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show14237a\/Jo_Ann_Green_Environmental_Award_2021_Winner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Harrison as the winner of the Jo Ann Green Environmental Award for 2021<\/a>. The award is named after one of the founding members of FOCI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The last agenda item was voting on a new board of directors. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Max Thysen and Autumn Barrett-Morgan are staying on to serve the remainder of their two-year term<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Arlene Tompkins, Miranda Cross, Richard Andrews, Kai Harvey and Sobhana Dilani Hippola stepped down<\/li>\n<li>Four new members were elected: Lisa Ferentinos, Michael Moore, Andy Vine and Ian Shamus Lennon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> FOCI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is always looking for more support both in volunteer time and donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full CKTZ News report below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The charitable environmental protection organization Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI) held their annual general meeting (AGM) on Jan. 20, which included presentations of project progress in 2021 and a significant change to the board of directors.
