But there is no great rush to the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The request, made mid-2021, came from the new Tla\u2019amin administration who want the name Powell repealed. The city was named for Dr. Israel Wood Powell, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.library.ubc.ca\/collections\/bcbooks\/items\/1.0221711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British Columbia\u2019s first Superintendent of Indian Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Historian Colin Osmond, who works with the Tla\u2019amin Nation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prpeak.com\/opinion\/who-was-israel-wood-powell-3923320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote in The Powell River Peak in July 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that Powell was \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an agent of colonialism who advocated for residential schools and the dismantling of Indigenous culture and governance systems.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, Osmond refers to historical records which reveal that Powell, along with other officials, abused their positions of authority to claim resource-rich Tla\u2019amin territory as Crown Land, while personally benefiting from these \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">backroom deals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the history that the working group wants to share goes back much further than the late 1800s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Group member and City Councillor Cindy Elliott<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said it's too early to reveal any details about the education pieces that will be communicated to the wider community. Part of creating safe space within the group for some painful conversations around these topics is that nothing is shared until it's finalized by the group. The next steps include agreeing on terms of reference that will set out the group's goals and a timeline, with the intent to share an information campaign prior to the municipal election this fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The entire undertaking is carefully executed within the parameters of the historical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com\/civicinfo\/public_files\/First%20Nations\/Community_Accord--Sliammon_First_Nation_and_Powell_River--2003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community Accord<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an understanding of mutual respect between the two communities, one municipal and one Indigenous.
