{"id":76071,"date":"2022-01-06T16:41:11","date_gmt":"2022-01-06T21:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=76071"},"modified":"2022-01-06T16:41:11","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T21:41:11","slug":"ottawas-top-doctor-says-school-closures-will-hurt-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/ottawas-top-doctor-says-school-closures-will-hurt-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa&#8217;s top doctor says school closures will hurt students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa\u2019s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches says school closures will negatively impact students\u2019 mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a media availability on Wednesday, Etches was joined by Mayor Jim Watson to deliver an update on the COVID-19 situation in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Etches says she agrees with the implementation of new restrictions by the province, but acknowledged the impact that school closures have had, and will continue to have, on the mental health of Ottawa\u2019s young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe've seen from previous lockdowns that parents and caregivers report high levels of stress when schools are closed and restrictions are in place and their ability to work is affected,\u201d says Etches. \u201cAlso, during previous periods when schools were closed\u2026 we saw more mental health challenges and increased hospitalizations with diagnoses such as depression and anxiety, and eating disorders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last March, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/everythingisnotok.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported a growing mental health crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with 74 per cent of Ontarians experiencing worsening mental health since the beginning of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the early days of the pandemic, Ottawa Public Health reported a correlation between improved mental health and school reopenings, with a majority of parents indicating they were less concerned about their children missing out on social opportunities when schools were open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watson, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/mayor-etches-call-for-reopening-schools-1.5443334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">urged the province to reopen schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in May following a 28-day closure, thanked Ottawa residents for doing their part. He cited high vaccination rates as an indicator that Ottawa is on the right track, but warned that the worst isn\u2019t over yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere's no easy way to say this,\u201d says Watson. \u201cBut the next two to four weeks are going to be some of the toughest weeks of this pandemic on all of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Etches made an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapublichealth.ca\/en\/public-health-topics\/special-statements-from-2022.aspx#January-2-2022-Special-statement-from-Dr-Vera-Etches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">official statement on Sunday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> indicating that closing schools would have harmful consequences for children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Wednesday, Etches stood by her statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI will continue to advocate for schools to reopen as soon as possible for the health of children,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ottawa is closing all schools to in-person learning until at least Jan. 17 following provincial restrictions announced on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Thursday, the Canadian Teachers\u2019 Federation (CTF) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prnmedia.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/the-return-to-remote-emergency-learning-was-not-inevitable-896100194.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published a press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> calling the government\u2019s approach to COVID-19 transmission in schools \u201ccomplacent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEducation workers have been forced to revert to crisis mode to ensure teaching and learning still happens while trying to keep illness at bay\u2026 But the message from too many governments to us is \u2018you're on your own.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CTF, along with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers\u2019 Federation (OSSTF) have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osstf.on.ca\/en-CA\/news\/statement-regarding-return-to-class-following-2021-22-winter-break.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">called on all levels of government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to help protect students and teachers by improving access to PPE, rapid testing, and ventilation, and to mandate contact tracing and case reporting in schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As of Wednesday, Ottawa has over 8,300 active cases, with 1,600 occurring in youth aged 19 or younger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, Etches says the high number of infections among children and youth is due mostly to community spread outside of schools, not outbreaks within schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Etches says that in order to reopen schools as soon as possible, Ottawa Public Health is prioritizing vaccines and boosters for youth and children and child caregivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUnlike a year ago, when we lived through similar public health restrictions, we do have the protection of vaccinations now,\u201d says Etches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Etches added that second doses of the pediatric vaccine will begin being distributed in late-January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The peak of the current wave is also expected for late-January, according to Etches, after which she anticipates a return to some degree of normalcy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the CHUO story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ottawa\u2019s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches says school closures will negatively impact students\u2019 mental health.
