{"id":75978,"date":"2022-01-07T18:42:09","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T23:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=75978"},"modified":"2022-01-07T18:42:09","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T23:42:09","slug":"omicron-strains-health-care-system-workers-face-exhaustion-say-unions-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/omicron-strains-health-care-system-workers-face-exhaustion-say-unions-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Omicron strains health-care system, workers face exhaustion, say unions"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Nearly 200 COVID-positive health-care workers in the Horizon Health Network were isolating by Friday, according to the regional health authority.<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s unclear how many workers at Sackville Memorial Hospital are affected, but that figure included 41 health-care staff in the health region overall.<br \/><br \/>CHMA reached out to officials from unions representing health-care workers to learn how the rapid spread of COVID-19 is affecting their members and hospital operations.<\/p>\r\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-75978-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Jan72022Hospital-1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Jan72022Hospital-1.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Jan72022Hospital-1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\r\n<p>The Canadian Union of Public Employees represents approximately 140 job classifications in the health-care system. <br \/><br \/>Examples include pandemic screeners, security guards, clerical staff, patient care attendants, maintenance workers, housekeeping and dietary staff. <br \/><br \/>Norma Robinson, president of the New Brunswick Council of Hospital Unions, CUPE Local 1252, said efforts are underway to procure personal protective equipment to safeguard workers from the highly contagious Omicron variant.<br \/><br \/>The self-isolation of infected workers is putting further strain on the health-care system, but there was no indication the issue was particularly severe at the Sackville hospital by Friday, she said.<br \/><br \/>Patients may encounter delays, and she asked the public for patience. \u201cIt might take a little bit longer, but we\u2019re there to serve, and we\u2019re trying to keep everybody healthy and safe,\u201d she said.<br \/><br \/>Alana Best, a nursing unit clerk and CUPE union president at the Sackville hospital, said COVID-19 was more nerve-wracking earlier in the pandemic, but the situation remains difficult.<br \/><br \/>\u201cI think it\u2019s still hard for people, there\u2019s still so much unknown and there\u2019s a lot of change,\u201d she said.<br \/><br \/>Paula Doucet, president of the New Brunswick Nurses\u2019 Union, said nurses are \u201cabsolutely exhausted\u201d almost two years into the pandemic as Omicron sweeps across New Brunswick and the country. <br \/><br \/>The union represents about 9,000 members, including registered nurses, nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses. <br \/><br \/>Retention and recruitment are major issues at the Sackville Memorial Hospital, resulting in ongoing service reductions, she said.<br \/><br \/>In the future, Doucet suggested the delivery of health care in Sackville could involve what she called a multi-disciplinary clinic instead of a hospital, though she acknowledged it\u2019s a big debate. <br \/><br \/>\u201cRight now we know in particular Sackville is struggling to maintain emergency service,\u201d she said.<br \/><br \/>\u201cBut is there an ability to have a multidisciplinary clinic so that the community has access to say, a nurse practitioner, and registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, and dietitians and social workers and psychologists?
