{"id":75961,"date":"2022-01-06T13:27:45","date_gmt":"2022-01-06T18:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=75961"},"modified":"2022-01-06T13:27:45","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T18:27:45","slug":"cortes-community-forest-wants-you-to-use-local-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/cortes-community-forest-wants-you-to-use-local-wood\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortes Community Forest wants you to use local wood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent cut within the boundaries of the Cortes Community Forest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show14100a0x50y1z\/Use_Community_Forest_Wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invited on-island builders<\/a> to make local wood a central part of their projects.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forest Manager Mark Lombard said the current harvest is about 75 per cent completed and should wrap up in the next few months, with tree planting following in late March. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cApproximately 2,500 m3 of merchantable logs went out by barge and to local mills during the first round of hauling in November, and a firewood contractor has started processing the first of the firewood logs for sale. Image courtesy of Cortes Community Forest Cooperative.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cortes Community Forest is overseen by the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cortesforestrypartnership.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cortes Forestry General Partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (CFGP,) which is an equal partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescommunityforestcoop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Community Forest Cooperative<\/a> (CCFC) and the Klahoose First Nation. The two partners have been stewarding approximately 3,800<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/stories\/bc-awards-community-forest-agreement-to-cortes-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> hectares of Crown land on Cortes Island<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2013FLNR0193-001482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> designated as a community forest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the BC Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations in August 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maureen Williams, a director of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CCFC, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and Henry Verschuur, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluejaylakefarm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bluejay Lake Farm<\/a>, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show727b\/BlueJay_Lake_Sawmill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sawmill<\/a>, spoke about the many benefits of using local wood, which include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting a partnership with Klahoose First Nation<\/li>\n<li>Supporting sustainable logging<\/li>\n<li>Creating local jobs<\/li>\n<li>High-quality wood, often at comparable or even lower prices than elsewhere<\/li>\n<li>Reducing fossil fuel usage since transportation is minimal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full CKTZ News interview below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent cut within the boundaries of the Cortes Community Forest invited on-island builders to make local wood a central part of their projects.
