Photo by Breanne Quesnel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kayakingtours.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spirit of the West Adventures<\/a>, a guided kayaking tour company on Quadra, was one of the three organizations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2021ENV0050-001541?fbclid=IwAR0bbeGNkDlOjNngySzhHJEF9xbDoI5DhlsVLcukc7WJPjQ03Q8r7dMLfsM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awarded funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bccleancoast.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clean Coast, Clean Waters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> initiative. The grant is part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/strongerbc.gov.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stronger BC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provincial post-pandemic economic recovery plan, and emphasized creating jobs for youth as well as working with First Nations communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Breanne Quesnel, co-owner and operator of Spirit of the West Adventures, said in the first few weeks of collection in October, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the volume of debris that we're finding is mind blowing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75479\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Brendan-Kowtecky-DSC_7265-small.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"The collection crews' goal was to pick up larger pieces of plastic before the broke down into tiny pieces. Photo by Brendan Kowtecky.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Her teams combed intertidal zones on the shores of primarily Quadra, Read, Maurelle, Cortes, Marina, Grant and Mittlenatch Islands. They covered 34.2 kilometers of shoreline on Cortes, being limited by the funding to areas that had not been recently cleaned through other initiatives.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75473\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/map-for-marine-debris-cleanup.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"The general scope of the cleanup operations. Everything had to be sorted, weighed and recorded, and Quesnel said 55 per cent of the total debris was shipped to <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanlegacy.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Legacy Foundation<\/a>, a marine-debris-specific recycling facility in Richmond, BC.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75481\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Screen-Shot-2021-12-28-at-5.37.17-PM.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"The team created this chart tallying the final weights of collected debris. Photo courtesy of Breanne Quesnel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The collection teams brought in vast amounts of aquaculture materials, and Quesnel hopes their detailed report might create policy around responsibility for ocean cleanup within the industry.
