{"id":75288,"date":"2021-12-23T16:28:57","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T21:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=75288"},"modified":"2021-12-23T16:28:57","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T21:28:57","slug":"bird-enthusiasts-get-ready-for-the-2021-christmas-bird-count","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/bird-enthusiasts-get-ready-for-the-2021-christmas-bird-count\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird enthusiasts get ready for the 2021 Christmas Bird Count"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place on Cortes on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and will once again be an individual or family activity due to pandemic-related precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortesmuseum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cortes Island Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> co-sponsors the count with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdscanada.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bird Studies Canada<\/a> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Audubon Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an American non-profit conservation group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The official count day is a 24-hour period when interested folk around the globe can observe and record the species and approximate number of individual birds they spot in their local area or even at their own bird feeder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The museum\u2019s webpage explains that for the 2021 \"CBC, count week will start on December 30 and will last until January 5.\u201d The three-day shoulder periods on either side are especially for observing rare birds, which on Cortes include great-horned owl, pygmy owl, trumpeter swan, and osprey.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75293\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/George-Sirk-bluejay.jpeg\" data-dt-img-description=\"Bluejays are rare on Cortes, which is the habitat of its close relative, Steller's jay. Photo by George Sirk.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Cortes Island Museum has been facilitating the Christmas Bird Count since 2001, and all the collected data is <a href=\"https:\/\/cortesmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Christmas-Bird-count-all-years-2020-upd-20210205.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the count has to be rescheduled due to adverse conditions, a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/cortesisland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tideline<\/a> will announce the new date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The checklists, forms and a map of the island are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cortesmuseum.com\/bird-counting\/#mg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">museum\u2019s website<\/a>. The observations need to be submitted by Jan. 6, which can be done <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by calling, mailing or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">emailing the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortesmuseum.com\/bird-counting\/#!mg_ld=1122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The very first CBC <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Christmas Day in 1900, thanks to writer and scientist Frank Chapman, and has evolved into North America\u2019s longest-running wintertime birding tradition. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75295\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/George-Sirk-baby-barred-owl.jpeg\" data-dt-img-description=\"Baby barred owl.
