{"id":74937,"date":"2021-12-27T20:21:06","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T01:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=74937"},"modified":"2021-12-27T20:21:06","modified_gmt":"2021-12-28T01:21:06","slug":"historic-paper-mill-in-powell-river-ends-operations-after-109-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/historic-paper-mill-in-powell-river-ends-operations-after-109-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic paper mill in Powell River ends operations after 109 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 200 employees at Catalyst Paper tisk<sup>w<\/sup>at mill in Powell River will be permanently laid off on Jan. 31 but there is optimism that the site can be transitioned to another industry, creating new jobs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to its parent company, Paper Excellence, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paperexcellence.com\/mill-location\/powell-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pulp and paper mill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the Sunshine Coast began operations in 1912, making it \"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the first newsprint mill in western Canada. At one point, one in every 25 newspapers worldwide was printed on paper manufactured there.\" <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The facility withstood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalystpaper.com\/fact-sheets\/our-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">many changes of ownership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014most recently it was acquired by Paper Excellence Canada in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In early 2020, a malware attack coincided with the global effects of COVID-19, and t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he mill was temporarily shut down, <a href=\"https:\/\/biv.com\/article\/2021\/03\/powell-river-paper-mill-restart-may\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a Business Intelligence for BC (BIV) article<\/a>. Of the 410 workers, approximately 200 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were invited back in May 2021, with the hope that full operations would eventually resume. Instead, Paper Excellence <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paperexcellence.com\/paper-excellence-announces-indefinite-curtailment-of-catalyst-paper-tiskwat-mill-in-powell-river-bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced an indefinite curtailment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the mill on Dec. 1, due to \u201cthe ongoing contraction of global paper markets and paper prices, particularly in Asia, creating significant on-going financial losses at the mill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The City of Powell River <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/powellriver.ca\/pages\/mayor-dave-formosa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mayor Dave Formosa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> told CKTZ News that Renewable Hydrogen Canada is in negotiations to take over the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brodie D\u2019Angio, manager of Work BC Powell River, said they are preparing to help with the transition as several hundred mill workers face losing their jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full CKTZ News update below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over 200 employees at Catalyst Paper tiskwat mill in Powell River will be permanently laid off on Jan. 31 but there is optimism that the site can be transitioned to another industry, creating new jobs.
