{"id":74699,"date":"2021-12-20T17:08:47","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T22:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=74699"},"modified":"2022-01-05T16:49:47","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T21:49:47","slug":"telus-tower-proposed-to-community-again-second-tower-planned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/telus-tower-proposed-to-community-again-second-tower-planned\/","title":{"rendered":"TELUS tower proposed to community again, second tower planned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TELUS, the Canadian telecommunications giant, is once again planning to construct a cellular tower on Cortes Island after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show13771a5s\/No_Cortes_Cell_Towers_for_now_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">public opposition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> derailed plans for three such towers earlier this year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the news reached Cortes in an indirect way at first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first public announcement from the corporation was made on neighboring Quadra Island when t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he company ran an ad in the Dec. 1 and 8 issues of Quadra\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebirdseye.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Bird\u2019s Eye<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTELUS is inviting the public to comment on a proposed telecommunications facility consisting of a 63.1-meter tall self-support tower and ancillary radio equipment situated on Paukeanum I.R. No. 3 on Cortes Island, BC,\" it read.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Dec. 6, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/cgi-bin\/tideline\/show_articles.cgi?ID=14138&amp;TOPIC=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a notice of the proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was published on CortesIsland.com\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a website also known as \"Tideline\"\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by local resident Candice May, who said she found it odd that this had only been advertised on Quadra. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CKTZ News inquired whether there was intention of communicating the proposal locally on Cortes, in an email sent on Dec. 3. TELUS eventually placed an identical ad as in The Bird\u2019s Eye into the Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 issues of the <a href=\"https:\/\/img1.wsimg.com\/blobby\/go\/0a7d54a0-1771-4bd5-b9c0-0748123c3f0c\/downloads\/Page%204-December%20%2017%2C%202021.jpg?ver=1639969303342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Marketer<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lena Chen, public affairs staff at TELUS, submitted this official statement to CKTZ News on Dec. 15, mentioning not one but two towers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our first proposal is to relocate the cell tower at 798 Rexford Road to a larger site on Tla\u2019amin Nation land to the south, and our second proposal is for a new cell site on private property off Jimmy Smith Way.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">had not responded to questions on when TELUS plans to publicly announce the second tower by the time this story went to air on Monday, Dec 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Since the newly proposed site is fully governed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tlaaminnation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tla\u2019amin First Nation<\/a>, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is excluded from the conversation. Noba Anderson, Regional Director for Cortes Island, brought the matter up at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cTGDUICjlvI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Dec. 8 meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the SRD Board, and it was determined the SRD has no jurisdiction over the proposed site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Island residents are divided in their opinions.
