{"id":73987,"date":"2021-12-20T21:29:44","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T02:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=73987"},"modified":"2021-12-21T14:33:13","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T19:33:13","slug":"housing-justice-organization-reports-record-number-homeless-deaths-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/housing-justice-organization-reports-record-number-homeless-deaths-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing justice organization reports record number homeless deaths in November"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto's Shelter and Housing Justice Network is reporting that more than 30 names will be added to the homeless memorial at the Church of the Holy Trinity, a record number for the city.<\/p>\n<p>According to the organization's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shjn.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Media-Advisory-Unprecendented-Increase-in-Homeless-Deaths.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent press release<\/a>, the city had a sharp increase in homeless deaths, attributing to the lack of affordable housing, increasing drug overdose incidents and the lack of essential workers to address these ongoing concerns.<\/p>\n<p>To honour those that passed away in the month of November, the network held a vigil in front of Holy Trinity church, where friends and families were invited to speak about their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the spike in homeless deaths, the Shelter and Housing Justice Network has made six demands to the City of Toronto government to help address the city\u2019s homeless crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The demands are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>City council must immediately strike a task force charged with taking all reasonable<br \/>\nsteps to reduce such deaths.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Immediately expand overdose prevention, education, training and implement the<br \/>\nrecommendations of\u00a0Toronto Shelter-Hotel Overdose Preparedness Assessment<br \/>\nProject.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Immediately incorporate 2,250 permanent, non-congregate shelter beds into the<br \/>\nsystem.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Repeal the \u2018no camping\u2019 bylaw.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Increase the target of newly attributed housing allowances in 2021 from 1,440 to<br \/>\n3,000.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Freeze all evictions with the emergency powers of the Emergency Management and<br \/>\nCivil Protection Act.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As the winter months get colder, the network says that shelter spaces and safe injection sites continue to be limited both by the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of essential staff for these faculities.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the no camping bylaw has severely affected individuals that used public parks and spaces as shelter prior to the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in May, several encampments around Trinity Bellwoods Park, Alexandria Park, Moss Park and Lamport Stadium were dismantled by the city and Toronto police.<\/p>\n<p>The evictions in Trinity Bellwoods and Lamport Stadium were criticized heavily by several homeless advocacy groups across the city as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrAndyNgo\/status\/1417925383643598849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent clashes<\/a> between police officers and protesters were caught on video and tents were forcibly destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The network published its full winter plan sent to Toronto Mayor John Tory and all city councillors on Oct.12.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shjn.ca\/winterplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to CJRU's coverage of the latest SHJN memorial (Dec. 14) here:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto&#8217;s Shelter and Housing Justice Network is reporting that more than 30 names will be added to the homeless memorial at the Church of the Holy Trinity, a record number for the city.
