It began as <a href=\"https:\/\/watershedsentinel.ca\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a community newsletter on Cortes Island<\/a> and grew to be an <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an award winning environmental magazine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>CKTZ News spoke with founder <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delores Broten about the magazine's story and about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her partner in life and work, Don Malcolm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working side by side as co-founders of the magazine, their relationship over the decades ran parallel to the growth of <em>Watershed Sentinel.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72263\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image1.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"Don Malcolm. H<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e had this poem printed on business cards that he handed out to everyone he met as his way of contributing to a better world:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Family of Strangers In this humanity,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In which we all live,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are all A part of each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a wonderful world We will inherit,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we recognize ourselves When we meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Malcolm, 2009\"<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This fall, on Sept. 23, Don passed away in Comox, BC.<\/p>\n<p>Delores and his loved ones pass on\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers along this path he travelled. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donations in memory may be made to the Tow-Tun Le Lum Societ<\/span><a href=\"blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y (www.tsowtunlelum.org) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Comox Valley Health Care Foundation for The Views <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvhealthcarefoundation.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(www.cvhealthcarefoundation.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delores and Don<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is funded through the Local Journalism Initiative through the Community Radio Fund of Canada.
