{"id":70479,"date":"2021-11-23T17:25:55","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T22:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=70479"},"modified":"2021-11-23T17:25:55","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T22:25:55","slug":"food-service-supply-chain-running-smoothly-on-cortes-despite-recent-bc-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/food-service-supply-chain-running-smoothly-on-cortes-despite-recent-bc-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"Food, service supply chain running smoothly on Cortes despite recent BC flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About a week after severe flooding washed away several major highways in BC, the small community of Cortes Island hasn't seen too much disruption in availability of goods thanks to local suppliers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When CKTZ News spoke to Aynsley Phillips at the Gorge Harbour Marina\u2019s general store on Monday, she said it was more or less business as usual, due to their reliance on products that come primarily from Vancouver Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phillips said that the pandemic has definitely helped the staff reassess long-term preparedness and they make sure to stock up on bulk staple items. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also said that the primary customer base\u2014local residents in the off-season\u2014are well versed in the unpredictability of island life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Cortes Market on Monday afternoon, owner <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bertha Jeffery said the local supply has been steady, but she has seen major shortages with some of the products she sources from the mainland, and was hoping another supplier in Victoria could fill the gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One obvious limit on availability of day-to-day products has come via a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/natural-disaster\/support\/restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">provincial government order<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> regarding car fuel.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you are not operating an essential vehicle, you are limited to purchasing 30 litres of fuel per trip to the gas station,\" the order states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The restriction is currently in place until the end of the month and applies to the Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, as well as flood-affected parts of the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky Highway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca\/people-have-overreacted-panic-buying-fuels-2nd-day-of-greater-victoria-gas-shortage-1.5673178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in an interview last Friday with CTV<\/a> that <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most of the gas sold on Vancouver Island comes from Washington state refineries and is delivered to mid-island by barge. Therefore, the cut-off road access to Alberta and other areas beyond the floods in the Lower Mainland doesn\u2019t impact the local market, and McTeague said the fuel supply should be steady.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked if there are any foreseen interruptions on the ferry routes between Cortes, Quadra and Campbell River, Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs for BC Ferries, emailed CKTZ, \u201cWe have fuel contracts with suppliers and don\u2019t anticipate shortages.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marshall also said that the flooding had not impacted BC Ferries services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadapost-postescanada.ca\/cpc\/en\/our-company\/news-and-media\/service-alerts.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canada Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, on the other han<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d, issued a yellow service alert for four western provinces on Nov. 15, according to Phil Legault, who works in media relations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u200b\u200bWhile mail delivery continues wherever possible, customers may experience some delays in receiving items destined for B.C. or originating from the province. Screenshot from Google Maps.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The extreme rainfall that resulted in severe flooding in five total areas across BC\u2019s lower mainland and southern Vancouver Island culminated in the province declaring a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2021PSSG0073-002190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">state of emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Wednesday, Nov. 17. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The federal government has deployed the Canadian Armed Forces to assist with flood relief. According to a press release accompanying the state of emergency declaration, \u201capproximately 17,775 people [were] evacuated due to impacts from the flooding, with 5,918 properties on Evacuation Order, and 3,632 properties on Evacuation Alert.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Environment Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/warnings\/report_e.html?bc42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warns<\/a> that another storm system is on the way, set to touch down overnight Wednesday and last until Friday morning, with total expected rainfall 40-80 mm.
