{"id":69258,"date":"2021-11-16T16:05:54","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T21:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=69258"},"modified":"2021-11-22T16:41:26","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T21:41:26","slug":"algonquin-college-students-and-staff-take-a-stand-against-anti-asian-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/algonquin-college-students-and-staff-take-a-stand-against-anti-asian-hate\/","title":{"rendered":"Algonquin College students and staff take a stand against anti-Asian hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algonquin College is hosting a series of events every Tuesday in November to combat anti-Asian discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative, described by the college as a series of keynotes and workshops, is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algonquincollege.com\/diversity\/taking-a-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking a Stand: Disrupting Anti-Asian Discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 The first of these events featured a panel discussion including Dennis Kao, a professor of social work at Carleton University, and Cindy Tran, a Vietnamese-Canadian journalist employed at CBC News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidents of racism directed toward the Asian-Canadian community have been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccncsj.ca\/more-anti-asian-racist-incidents-reported-per-capita-in-canada-than-us-according-to-first-national-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sept. 2020 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Chinese Canadian National Council (CCNC), the fourth-highest incidence of self-reported anti-Asian hate crimes occurred in Ontario, with the province accounting for 38 per cent of all reported incidents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=6c281846-fb3b-4eeb-8bfe-17b129b06c0e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March 2021, acknowledging the sharp rise in hate crimes directed toward the Asian-Canadian community.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn 2020, the number of reported incidents targeting people of Asian descent increased to 14 from two in 2019,\" the statement read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Gauen, Algonquin College\u2019s diversity and inclusion specialist, described the college\u2019s \u201cTaking a Stand\u201d initiative as, \u201ca step in the right direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis initiative is really about bringing awareness to some of that and talking about how it's now manifesting in discrimination on our campuses,\u201d said Gauen. \u201cWe can only do so much through a series of five events in November. It's a start in achieving our objectives and making sure that Algonquin College is a place where everyone belongs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Gauen, the initiative is intended to bring together a community of students and staff of Asian-descent who have experienced discrimination and feelings of \u201cotherness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauen outlined the three main objectives the college administration hopes to achieve by hosting the weekly events. At the top of the agenda is the task of bringing awareness, \u201cto the nuances and realities of anti-Asian discrimination, what that looks like and how it manifests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of our objectives is to give our employees and our learners the skills to interrupt those behaviors when we see them in our campuses and our communities,\u201d said Gauen. \u201cWe're doing that by having specific training on identifying and interrupting microaggressions for our employees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second objective is to fulfil the needs of Algonquin College\u2019s many international students. Algonquin\u2019s Pembroke campus is responsible for facilitating the Local Immigration Partnership of Lanark and Renfrew by providing resources to the over 4,000 international students attending the college. According to Gauen, the partnership hosts workshops to help foster \u201cintercultural competence\u201d among staff, students, and alumni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauen describes the third objective as identifying the areas in which employees of the college need help, and responding accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of those has been to put together a professional networking event for our Asian colleagues,\u201d said Gauen. \u201cAny employee who identifies with the term \u2018Asian\u2019 is welcome to come out to a facilitated session where people are able to connect, meet one another, and share some of their experiences on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauen says she recognizes that five events over the course of a month will not completely eradicate anti-Asian discrimination, nor will they reverse its long history within Canada. However, Gauen says the college will \u201ccontinue to do this important work in the future.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series of five events isn't going to solve this problem, '' said Gauen. \u201cIt's just going to continue the dialogue, try to foster some change in our behaviors. I think a lot of this comes down to how we treat one another every day in those small interactions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remaining events are set to occur on Nov. 16 and and 23, and will feature prominent Asian-Canadian professionals such as Melissa Grelo, co-host of CTV\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Social<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Christopher Tse, a popular poet and writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Algonquin College is hosting a series of events every Tuesday in November to combat anti-Asian discrimination.
