Toronto Centre MP Marci Ien was appointed as the minister of Women and Gender Equality during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s cabinet reshuffle this week.<\/p>\n
Ien is one six new women entering the cabinet following the 2021 federal election in September.<\/p>\n
She held her seat in Toronto during the election, gaining 52 per cent of the vote in the\u00a0 traditional Liberal stronghold.<\/p>\n
The seat was initially won by Ien in a 2020 byelection, which was triggered after the resignation of former finance minister Bill Morneau.<\/p>\n
She defeated former Green Party leader Annamie Paul in a close race in the byelection, before gaining the majority of the votes in the federal election.<\/p>\n
The former CTV journalist is a long time resident of Toronto Centre , and\u00a0 she and her family continue to live in the St. Jamestown area.<\/p>\n
Part of Ien\u2019s responsibilities as minister includes the youth portfolio, which she picked up from MP Bardash Chagger, who was not included in the new cabinet after the reshuffle.<\/p>\n
Ien is one of nine new MPs in Trudeau\u2019s cabinet moving forward.<\/p>\n
Prior to her decision to enter politics, Ien co-hosted the CTV show, The Social in Toronto.<\/p>\n
