Her story is being told to a new generation of Canadians in a new documentary film from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Film Board of Canada<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Directed by Courtney Montour and called '<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/mary-two-axe-earley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again<\/a>', the film traces Earley\u2019s fight against sex discrimination and, in so doing, becoming a key leader in Canada\u2019s women\u2019s Rights Movement. Relying on mostly audio recordings, Montour says it was \u201ca challenge to find the archives for the film, and that\u2019s probably also why a film wasn\u2019t made before. Her fight was so well-documented from the late sixties to 1985...the media was covering it all at the time. But it just wasn\u2019t kept.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In looking back over the process of making the film, Montour says, \u201cit\u2019s such an honor to have had her be a part of this film and to share her stories, and it\u2019s so important to keep that knowledge alive, because...the institutions aren\u2019t doing that...and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">like I said, bringing it into the present and having all of us gather in Mary\u2019s home and listen to the recordings in the same space where this grassroots effort started and so much change happened,[was] what Mary was fighting for, First nations women to be in their community and be a part of their communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Listen to reporter James Mainguy's interview with Courtney Montour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the 1960s and \u201870s, Mary Two-Axe Earley fought against sex discrimination in Canada\u2019s Indian Act, successfully regaining Indian status for Indigenous women who chose to marry men who weren\u2019t Indigenous.
