{"id":66852,"date":"2021-10-14T18:19:21","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T22:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=66852"},"modified":"2021-10-31T18:33:21","modified_gmt":"2021-10-31T22:33:21","slug":"preserving-canadas-legacy-of-the-residential-school-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/preserving-canadas-legacy-of-the-residential-school-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Preserving Canada\u2019s Legacy of the Residential School System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/nctr.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation<\/a> was established as \u201ca place of learning and a place of dialogues where we share and discuss the truth of [Residential] School history and legacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From 2008 to 2015, the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission collected stories from survivors of Canada\u2019s Residential School System, which ran from the late 1800s until the last school closed in the 1990s. It was created to isolate Indigenous children from the influence of their own native culture and religion so as to assimilate them into the dominant Canadian culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brenda Gunn is the academic and research director at the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation, which is located at the University of Manitoba. She talks about the Centre\u2019s mandate and its outreach programs.
