From the archipelago of Haida Gwaii to east of Prince George, there is a vast range in community sizes and distance between them. While most communities are part of a large power grid (either from Kitimat or Prince George), outages are still a common event in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as fall subsides to harsher, colder and more extreme winter weather, BC Hydro implores residents of the north to be prepared for planned and unplanned outages.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/safety-outages\/power-outages\/prepare-for-outages.html#during\">recent release<\/a>, the Northern Division of BC Hydro offered tips for preparing yourself, family, and home for those cold, dark nights and days:<\/p>\n<div class=\"title parbase\">\n<h3 class=\"page-title\">Prepare for outages<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"leftBottomPar parsys\">\n<div class=\"text parbase section\">\n<section class=\"rte\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p>\"Power outages can happen at any time. While we work throughout the year to minimize their duration and impact, it\u2019s difficult to know how long they\u2019ll last. That's why it's important to always be prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Start by\u00a0making an emergency kit and an outage plan. You can do this by checking our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/safety-outages\/power-outages\/outage_list.html\">outage list<\/a>. If you don\u2019t see your outage listed, call us at 1 800 BCHYDRO (1 800 224 9376) or *49376 on a mobile. If you have a MyHydro account, log in and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/app.bchydro.com\/report-outage\/web\/report-outage.html?src=wepnk.html\">report the outage online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Get other tips on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/safety-outages\/power-outages\/during-an-outage.html\">what to do during an outage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What to do if you see a fallen power line<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to tell just by sight or sound if a power line that has fallen on the ground or become damaged is still live \u2013 it doesn\u2019t always spark, smoke or make a buzzing sound. That's why if you come across a down or damaged power line, it\u2019s important to treat it as an emergency situation.
