{"id":65486,"date":"2021-10-19T16:00:48","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T20:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=65486"},"modified":"2021-10-28T16:31:39","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T20:31:39","slug":"how-to-address-indigenous-specific-racism-in-b-c-s-health-care-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/how-to-address-indigenous-specific-racism-in-b-c-s-health-care-system\/","title":{"rendered":"How to address Indigenous-specific racism in BC\u2019s health care system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Released late last year, \u201cIn Plain Sight\u201d is a report addressing Indigenous-specific racism in B.C.\u2019s health care system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among its first recommendations is that the provincial government \u201cdevelop appropriate policy foundations and implement legislative changes to require anti-racism and \u201chard-wire\u201d cultural safety.\u201d To that end, BC has set up a task force with a mandate to spearhead the implementation of such policy changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Jock is CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnha.ca\/\">First Nations Health Authority<\/a> (FNHA). He is also co-chair of the \u201cIn Plain Sight\u201d task force. Jock said one of the problems is that Indigenous people \"fall through the cracks\" in the health care system,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIn the case of first nations people, for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">example they have not been part of the overall health system...there have been so many instances where, First Nations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people fall in the cracks,\" he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Nations Health Authority is unique in Canada, one already addressing Indigenous-specific racism in the health care system.
