{"id":64800,"date":"2021-10-18T11:55:52","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T15:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=64800"},"modified":"2021-10-21T17:33:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T21:33:15","slug":"community-led-deathcare-begins-third-season-of-monthly-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/community-led-deathcare-begins-third-season-of-monthly-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Community-led deathcare begins third season of monthly learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Cortes Island DeathCaring Collective began its third annual educational series of monthly meetings on Oct. 5, at the end of a year that saw the first two natural burials in recent history on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resident Margaret Verschuur founded the collective with four others after her long-term involvement with the group Way To Go on Quadra Island, which has been running for eight years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The collective, which describes itself as \"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a group of folks who are enthusiastic about opening up conversations about death, dying, and grief,\" holds monthly meetings in the quieter, darker months of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show13978a0x50y1z\/Cortes_DeathCaring_Collective_Meeting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">meeting on Oct. 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> included a guest presentation from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Priya Huffman who spoke about the practices and rituals around death and dying in a Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Past topics have included <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ending to your loved one's bodies at home as well as natural burial, both of which have helped create a group of volunteers who can guide families through the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In natural, or green burials, \"the whole idea is to return this body to the earth as simply and naturally as possible, where it will contribute to new life,\" said Verschuur.<\/p>\n<p>With help from the <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cortes Island DeathCaring Collective, n<\/span>atural burials are held at designated sites on the island.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Future topics the group hopes to explore are near death experiences, organ donation and compassionate communication, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Click below to listen to the interview with Margaret Verschuur about community-led deathcare on Cortes Island:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cortes Island DeathCaring Collective began its third annual educational series of monthly meetings on Oct. 5, at the end of a year that saw the first two natural burials in recent history on the island.
