{"id":62938,"date":"2021-09-30T09:57:50","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T13:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=62938"},"modified":"2021-10-06T00:20:59","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T04:20:59","slug":"mandatory-vaccines-for-some-workers-as-nova-scotia-moves-into-phase-5-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/mandatory-vaccines-for-some-workers-as-nova-scotia-moves-into-phase-5-reopening\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory vaccines for some workers as Nova Scotia moves into Phase 5 reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nova Scotia\u2019s Phase 5 reopening plan will see social distancing and gathering limits lifted for businesses but will require healthcare workers and school employees to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>If those employees aren\u2019t vaccinated by Nov. 30, they could be put on unpaid administrative leave and could eventually be fired.<\/p>\n<p>In the technical briefing ahead of Wednesday\u2019s COVID-19 update, Dr. Robert Strang stressed the importance of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re caring for somebody, whether it\u2019s in a hospital [or] long-term care facility, if you\u2019re teaching somebody, who, because of their age can\u2019t be vaccinated, you have an obligation to get vaccinated so you can do your job safely,\u201d said Strang.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning Monday, Oct. 4, anyone wishing to enter a non-essential business or activity will need to show proof of vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Those include full-service restaurants and bars, gyms or indoor sporting events.<\/p>\n<p>People will not be asked to show proof of vaccination at essential services such as retail stores, banks, hair salons, doctor\u2019s offices, hotels or faith services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/coronavirus\/proof-of-full-vaccination-policy\/\">For a complete list of where proof of vaccination will or won\u2019t be required, follow this link.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When asked if requiring proof of vaccination to fully participate in the reopening was a way to encourage more people to get vaccinated, Strang says that is not the intent of the regulations, but is a welcome side-effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the way we look after each other or the main way in a pandemic, is to get vaccinated because that protects everyone else around us. I\u2019m sorry if people don\u2019t like that but you have an obligation to care for your neighbour. Care for the healthcare worker who\u2019s going to be there for you if you get sick,\u201d said Strang. \u201cI won\u2019t apologize for having to take these strong measures to get to the level of safety that we need to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nova Scotians who received their vaccinations in the province can obtain a copy of their record digitally by visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/coronavirus\/proof-of-full-vaccination-policy\/\">Nova Scotia government coronavirus web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That record will be updated Oct. 4 to include a QR code.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses will be able to download an app on Oct. 22, which will read the code and simply show a green check or red X to indicate if a person is vaccinated without revealing any further personal information.<\/p>\n<p>At Wednesday\u2019s COVID-19 briefing, Premier Tim Houston took a decidedly different tone from past efforts to convince Nova Scotians to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62943\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62943\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62943\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-500x364.jpg\" alt=\"A man speaks into a microphone\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-500x364.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-1536x1117.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-2048x1489.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-1024x745.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Photo-5-296x215.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-62943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Premier Tim Houston. Photo Communications Nova Scotia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After thanking the majority of Nova Scotians who have been vaccinated, Houston spoke to some of the 60,000 who are eligible but have yet to get their shots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of you don\u2019t want to and I also know that you want to convince me that there is a reason not to get vaccinated. But let me be very clear, I don\u2019t agree with you,\u201d said Houston. \u201cNo matter how many YouTube videos or conspiracy theories from so-called experts that you send to me, we will not agree. Getting vaccinated is important.
