{"id":62403,"date":"2021-09-21T11:31:45","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T15:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=62403"},"modified":"2021-09-24T14:54:33","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T18:54:33","slug":"liberals-hold-toronto-centre-convincingly-pauls-leadership-in-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/liberals-hold-toronto-centre-convincingly-pauls-leadership-in-question\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberals hold Toronto Centre convincingly, Paul\u2019s leadership in question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto Centre re-elected Liberal incumbent MP, Marci Ien, convincingly with about <a href=\"https:\/\/enr.elections.ca\/National.aspx?lang=e\">50 per cent of the vote<\/a> on election night.<\/p>\n<p>The NDP\u2019s Brian Chang came in second place with 26 per cent and the Conservatives\u2019 Ryan Lester was third with 12 per cent. Green Party Leader Annamie Paul, who placed second to Ien in the 2020 byelection, finished in fourth with about 8.5 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Ien was first elected as Toronto Centre\u2019s MP during the Oct.26 byelection in 2020. She replaced former Liberal finance minister Bill Morneau, who re-signed on Aug.17, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Ien first entered politics during her 2019 by-election campaign after working as a CTV journalist.<\/p>\n<p>A day after her victory, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUGMSvpLiLy\/\">Ien posted a video reel t<\/a>hanking various communities of Toronto Centre including Yonge and Dundas, Moss Park, Cabbage Town and St James Town. Ien, as well as her family, are longtime residents of the St. James Town community.<\/p>\n<p>This was Brian Chang\u2019s third time running, and Ryan Lester\u2019s second time.<\/p>\n<p>For Paul, this was her third time running for the riding\u2019s seat. Photo courtesy of Annamie Paul's campaign website.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Paul\u2019s 2021 result is similar to her performance in the 2019 federal election, when she received about seven per cent of the vote, placing fourth as well.<\/p>\n<p>She replaced long-time leader Elizabeth May in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Since becoming leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/annamie-paul-green-party-politics-infighting-1.6107725\">the Greens have faced infighting<\/a>, an MP crossing the floor in the House of Commons, controversies surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and blocked funding from the party\u2019s council for Paul\u2019s federal campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Due to budget constraints and a smaller staff compared to 2019, Paul campaigned almost exclusively in Toronto Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The Greens received 2.5 per cent of the popular vote in 2021, down from 6.5 per cent in 2019. The party won two seats, including May's Saanich\u2013Gulf Islands riding in British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>Paul is expected to have a leadership review in six months, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenparty.ca\/en\">party\u2019s mandate and rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She must be endorsed by at least 60 per cent of party members to stay on as leader.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto Centre has been a Liberal stronghold since 1993, and along with Ien\u2019s victory, has seen convincing wins from Bill Morneau, Bob Rae and Chrystia Freeland in past elections.<\/p>\n<p>More details to follow.<\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to the CJRU news update here:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto Centre re-elected Liberal incumbent MP, Marci Ien, convincingly with about 50 per cent of the vote on election night.
