In order to enter many \u2018non-essential\u2019 businesses, people will have to prove they\u2019ve received at least one shot of an approved vaccine. After October 24, people will have to prove they\u2019ve been fully vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 15px; height: 15px;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many people, however, will not be able to apply for the vaccine card. Ingrid Mendez is Executive Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watari.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watari Counselling and Support Services<\/a>, and one of the co-signers of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pivotlegal.org\/response_to_proof_vaccination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a> to B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix, and Chief Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry. The letter outlines the barriers many people face in obtaining a card, such as, \u201c...people that don't have a BC ID or a government ID either because, you know, they're struggling and are on the street and will not be able to access an ID.\u201d The letter also refers to drug users, and migrant workers as well as undocumented people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"gap\" style=\"line-height: 15px; height: 15px;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The letter\u2019s recommendations revolve around, \u201c...supporting community led responses.\u201d But when asked if the government has reached out to the Downtown Eastside community, Ingrid\u2019s response was, \u201cAs far as I am aware, it hasn't happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>B.C. has introduced a proof-of-vaccine card that takes effect on September 13.
