{"id":60451,"date":"2021-09-14T11:44:06","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T15:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=60451"},"modified":"2021-09-14T11:44:06","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T15:44:06","slug":"liberal-climate-plan-is-achievable-says-clean-energy-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/liberal-climate-plan-is-achievable-says-clean-energy-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal climate plan is achievable, says Clean Energy Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">After modelling the climate plans of the four major parties in this election, <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/media-brief-how-do-the-federal-parties-stack-up-on-climate\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Clean Energy Canada announced<\/span><\/a> the Liberals have the only plan they know is achievable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe really found that the Liberal platform is both ambitious and has the plans, the details, the actions of how it is going to reduce emissions,\u201c explained Merran Smith, a former Cortes Island resident and executive director of Clean Energy Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Clean Energy Canada is a climate and clean energy program within the\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/mecs\/facilities\/centre-for-dialogue.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">Simon Fraser University.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Her team calculates that the Liberal could reduce emissions to 40 percent or more, from 2005 levels, by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While the NDP and Green plans claim to be more ambitious, Smith said there wasn\u2019t the detail on the policies and actions they plan to take. This makes it difficult to assess them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She added that while it is positive that the Conservatives produced a climate plan, it is weaker and contains caveats that mean some actions might not be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is actually taking us backward,\" said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that Clean Energy Canada has noted over the past 18 months, is the degree other countries are integrating their climate and economic policies.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our exports are going to be evaluated by the amount of carbon solutions in it, which means if we are going to be successful we need to reduce our carbon emissions,\" said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>One of the areas where Smith saw the Liberals far ahead of the other parties was investing in the low carbon economy of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\"We don't see those kinds of details in the NDP or Green platforms. With the Conservatives, we really see a focus on investing in some of the industries of the past,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">CKTZ News emailed the North Island \u2014 Powell River candidates from all four parties on the morning off Wednesday September 8th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Greens and NDP normally respond to CKTZ's queries within a couple or three days; the Conservatives rarely reply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Only the Liberal Party replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">David Somerville, campaign manager for Liberal candidate Jennifer Grenz, refers to the modelling SFU economist Mark Jaccard did for the Clean Energy Canada evaluation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMark Jaccard, who works as an advisor to the BC NDP government on climate policy, agrees that the Liberal climate plan is the only plan that is both ambitious and realistically achievable. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Adrian Wyld via Flickr (Public Domain)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prime Minister Trudeau was referring to Clean Energy Canada's report in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/canada-federal-leaders-debate-justin-trudeau-2021-transcript\/amp\">repeated references to an expert review of his climate plan<\/a> during the English leadership debate on September 9th.<\/p>\n<p>\"If you look at what the experts and the climate scientists and the economists have said, we\u2019re the ones with the strongest plan to fight climate change,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>NDP leader Jagmeet Singh replied, \"I don\u2019t accept that, first of all. I don\u2019t accept at all.
