{"id":60413,"date":"2021-09-10T17:05:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T21:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=60413"},"modified":"2021-10-06T00:31:59","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T04:31:59","slug":"parents-group-wants-masks-to-stay-on-in-ns-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/parents-group-wants-masks-to-stay-on-in-ns-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents group wants masks to stay on in NS schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nova Scotia Parents for Public Schools, a Facebook group with close to 18,000 members is raising their concerns after the province\u2019s chief medical officer for health Dr. Robert Strang announced students and staff would no longer be required to wear masks beginning September 20.<\/p>\n<p>Co-chair Stacey Rudderham says the decision whether or not to wear a mask can\u2019t be left up to students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids don\u2019t know how to make personal choices that are always in their best interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rudderham says many of the parents in her group are worried ventilation issues at their schools still haven\u2019t been addressed.<\/p>\n<p>That combined with the decision to drop the masking requirement has shaken their faith in public health direction being put forward by the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year we saw a lot of people saying that they trusted the situation was going to be fine and after the spring, we\u2019re not seeing a lot of that in the group anymore,\u201d said Rudderham.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Nova Scotia, many provinces are requiring teachers to either prove they have been fully vaccinated or undergo regular COVID testing.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of proof isn\u2019t an issue for Rudderham.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having any hard numbers to confirm her speculation, she\u2019s confident the majority of teachers have had their vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were very aware of last spring was that the NSTU (Nova Scotia Teachers Union) and the teachers were asking to prioritized; that they should be treated like healthcare workers and they wanted to be vaccinated,\u201d said Rudderham. \u201cThey were very much stressed out about the amount of risk that they were facing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nova Scotia Parents for Public Education group is putting together a letter outlining their concerns to present to the newly appointed Minister of Education Becky Druhan.<\/p>\n<p>Rudderham expects to send that letter off to the department within the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E-mail:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:edhalversonnews@gmail.com\">edhalversonnews@gmail.com<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Twitter: @edwardhalverson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>To listen to the broadcast of this story, press play below.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nova Scotia Parents for Public Schools, a Facebook group with close to 18,000 members is raising their concerns after the province\u2019s chief medical officer for health Dr. Robert Strang announced students and staff would no longer be required to wear masks beginning September 20.
