{"id":59409,"date":"2021-09-06T11:11:10","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T15:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=59409"},"modified":"2021-09-06T15:25:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T19:25:09","slug":"several-species-at-risk-spotted-at-fairy-creek-marbled-murrelet-northern-goshawk-western-screech-owl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/several-species-at-risk-spotted-at-fairy-creek-marbled-murrelet-northern-goshawk-western-screech-owl\/","title":{"rendered":"Several endangered bird species spotted at Fairy Creek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">A number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildernesscommittee.org\/news\/fairy-creek-logging-microcosm-species-decline\"><span class=\"s1\">species at risk were seen near a part of Fairy Creek where the logging company Teal Jones is about to commence operations<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the BC Ministry of Forests confirmed there have been sightings and they have hired a species expert to conduct surveys and provide guidance for management approaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to Charlotte Dawe of the Wilderness Committee, there have been 240 sightings of the marbled murrelet by registered biologists. Other species at risk \u2014 like the Western screech owl, Northern goshawk and Olive-sided Flycatcher \u2014 have also been seen.<\/p>\n<p>The Wilderness Committee is a Western Canadian environmental organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildernesscommittee.org\/our-work\">dedicated\u00a0to<\/a> preserving\u00a0wilderness, protecting wildlife, defending parks, safeguarding public resources and fighting for a healthy climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhat\u2019s happening in Fairy Creek is very unique because there are so many people on the ground right now. In normal times when logging is happening, we don\u2019t know what species are there. Ministry spokesperson emailed CKTZ News that the provincial government takes species at risk and old growth management seriously. They have set aside over 2,000 hectares as protected areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe wildlife habitat areas were established for marbled murrelets, northern goshawk and red-legged frog. These large areas for umbrella species ensure habitats are secured for many other species, like the Olive-sided fly catcher. Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development biologists are also part of the multi-disciplinary Western Screech owl recovery team of federal, provincial and independent experts, working to gather information and \u00a0inform recovery actions,\" according to the email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cLogging companies have a financial interest in these nests being undiscovered and the B.C. government is not doing enough to locate them, and so murrelet habitat remains unprotected even if we know they\u2019re living in a specific area,\u201d says Dawe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A number of species at risk were seen near a part of Fairy Creek where the logging company Teal Jones is about to commence operations.
